Supermarkets to recruit army of thousands to help with rising demand during Covid

SUPERMARKETS are recruiting thousands of workers to help stores cope with a boom in demand during the Covid pandemic.

Tesco has employed tens of thousands of temporary staff to help in the Covid effort, while Iceland is looking to get 3,500 more workers in to meet a rise in demand during the third national lockdown.

It comes as shoppers are flocking for food while lockdown restrictions toughen up in the country’s fight against coronavirus.

The surge has meant many shoppers have claimed delivery slots are “running out”, with many scrambling to book a time to get their shop delivered in.

Tesco’s chief executive gave an update on the store’s recruitment drive yesterday. 

He said the store will be keeping on many of the 46,000 temporary colleagues Tesco employed over the Christmas period to help meet lockdown demand over the coming weeks.

Tools to use to help you write your CV

HERE are some tools and apps that can help you put together your CV:

  • Resume app: If you struggle formatting your CV, you can choose from 21 templates in the Resume app to help you. And once you've put it together, you can export it as a PDF directly to your email. Resume is free to download and use, but has additonal premimum options that you can pay for.
  • Grammarly: It's important to get your spelling and grammar accurate, so run your CV through a tool such as Grammarly to check for any errors. It's free to download straight to your desktop.
  • Vizualize.me: If you've got an exisiting LinkedIn account, Vizualize.me takes the data and turns it into a timeline of your employment history and a breakdown of your skills. The free tool has six different themes so it's a good option to make your CV look visually appealing as well.
  • VisualCV: As well as making your CV look eye catching, VisualCV also makes sure it can be read by electronic systems that some recruiters use to filter CVs. It's also free to sign up for.

The supermarket is suffering a staff shortage after asking 7,000 of its “most vulnerable colleagues” to stay at home on paid leave in response to the latest government Covid guidance.

On top of this, around 10% of Tesco’s workforce – approximately 30,000 workers – have been absent from work in recent because they either have coronavirus or are self-isolating.

“I'm delighted that many colleagues who joined for Christmas will be staying on in the coming weeks,” Tesco’s chief said.

“I am so grateful to everyone for getting stock in.”

Iceland is also on the hunt for more workers to cope with the influx ofshoppers.

The supermarket is looking to hire 1,000 new home delivery drivers and 2,500 store assistants who will help put together online delivery orders.

Many of the 3,300 temporary workers rolled in to help Iceland meet a spike in demand over Christmas are being offered roles in the business.

All vacancies can be found on Iceland's recruitment website, and Iceland has said more roles will appear over the coming weeks.

The Sun understands other supermarkets are not planning similar recruitment drives.

Waitrose said there are no plans yet to get more staff in, as the store would be able to call on John Lewis staff to help if needed.

Meanwhile, Lidl said it is not aiming to recruit any temporary staff to help during lockdown.

Morrisons, Sainsbury's and Asda are yet to share details of any potential recruitment drives. We will update you as soon as we know more.

If you do take a trip to your local supermarket, be aware that you might have to queue before being allowed in store.

Ministers have told local councils to place limits on the number of people allowed into shops at any one time over fears they could become hotspots for the virus.
