These four common make-up mistakes could be making you look older, says expert

We’re probably all guilty of staying loyal to one single make-up look for longer than we should. For example, if we’ve always pencilled in our brows a certain way, we may continue to do that daily for the rest of our makeup-wearing lives.

While knowing what we like and finding good products are no bad things, we should actually be switching up how we do our make-up as we age, says Karen Betts, permanent make-up artist and founder ofK.P Pro. This is to ensure we stay looking as youthful as possible with targeted products and application techniques to suit our age.

Here, Karen talks us through four common mistakes she sees people make with their make-up that add years to their complexions and a few simple swaps you can make to get a glowing, youthful look.

1. Skipping blush

If a blusher isn’t a part of your make-up regime, it absolutely should be. By choosing the right shade and formula of blush you can instantly add a flattering flush of colour to a lacklustre complexion.

Karen recommends: “Opt for a shade that’s slightly brighter than your skin tone to help to add warmth and give a youthful illusion. Sweep it across your cheeks and bridge of the nose for an easy skin boost.”

Powder make-up formulas – like blushers, bronzers and setting powder – can sit in creases, so you want to opt for liquid formulas where possible for a dewy, not cakey, look. These multi-tasking blusher drops are effortless to apply and will light up your face in a flash.

The product is worth £28 but you can snap up a tube of this glow-boosting blush in this month’s OK! Glow & Go Beauty Box, from just £7.50 here for new subscribers. This month’s box is worth over £95 and features four other fabulous skincare finds.

2. Sticking to an eyebrow style from your twenties

“Ultra-thin, arched brows can be very ageing. Most make-up artists would recommend full, bushy brows to help signify youth,” says Karen. “We aren’t all blessed with brows as naturally shapely as Cara Delevingne or Lily Collins, so microblading is the next step to achieving the salon brow look.”

If you’re not ready for a permanent change, you could consider eyebrow lamination – which chemically straightens your brows to give a fluffier appearance – or try tinted brow gels to set your brow hairs up in place.

3. Overdoing the under-eye concealer

While putting concealer under your eyes will help disguise dark circles, applying too much can mean you’ll just have to deal with secondary under-eye problems: fine lines and more defined wrinkles.

If you don’t need heavy-duty concealer to cover darkness, you can swerve the product altogether. If you do need a bit of coverage, Karen advises going for “a very lightweight concealer to avoid it sinking into your fine lines”.

4. Forgetting primer

Many of us will have heard of primers but not considered how they could be beneficial to our own make-up bags. They aren’t just a product reserved for make-up artists, and can make a huge difference in how foundation and concealer sit on all complexions, no matter the skin type or condition. Give one a go before applying your foundation to see the difference in your skin texture.

“Opt for a primer that’s infused with hyaluronic acid,” suggests Karen. “This will deeply hydrate your skin while also giving the illusion of a plumper, firmer base.”
