Who cares about the questions! University Challenge viewers are distracted by ‘amazing’ King’s College London captain Atyab Rashid and his ‘gorgeous’ voice as he leads his team to victory in the series premiere

It is a show for armchair quizzers, but University Challenge viewers found themselves distracted from the questions last night by the King’s College London captain and his ‘gorgeous’ voice.
Philosophy student Atyab Rashid, 22, from Daventry, Northamptonshire, led his team to victory over Glasgow University in the opening match of the new series of the BBC2 quiz show – but it wasn’t his intellectual prowess that had fans talking.
Dozens of swooning viewers took to Twitter to praise his charming demeanour and ‘amazing’ voice, with some saying he has a future in broadcasting.

‘I want Rashid to narrate something’, wrote one impressed viewer.
Another said: ‘Gosh, doesn’t Rashid have a gorgeous voice!’
‘Rashid is amazing how can I meet Rashid is he real? #UniversityChallenge’, wrote a third.
A fourth viewer agreed: ‘Watching #UniversityChallenge Rashid may be the most well spoken man ever.’
Team captain Atyab started studying political philosophy at KCL in September 2018 and was elected treasurer and vice-president of the King’s College London Liberal Democrat Society.
He was joined on the show by Ananth Sathyanath, of Hampshire, who is studying medicine; developmental biology student Rachel Bedwin, from south west London; and Oliver Beard from south east London.
On the competing side was physics student Erin Thompson, from Glasgow; physics student Nicky Fairbairn, from the west coast of Scotland, captain Sean Cairns from Clydebank and Darius Darulas studying computer science and physics.
Glasgow initially took the lead in the head-to-head quiz match but King’s College London pulled ahead in the final moments of the show, eventually winning 115 to 100.

Several took to Twitter to with one joking the philosophy student has ‘a future in public announcing’ while others have already predicted that Rashid could become a firm favourite contestant this series
It means Atyab and the rest of the team will return to screens in the second round.
Although the series has only just started, viewers are already predicting Rashid will be one to watch.
One viewer even predicted that Rashid will become the new Eric Monkman of Wolfson College, Cambridge, who became a viewer favourite after his stint on the series in 2017.
‘It’s only 5 mins into the 1st ep, but reckon we already have our new Monkman. #Rashid #UniversityChallenge’, said the viewer.
The Canadian student became something of an internet celebrity since joining the BBC Two quiz show thanks to his animated facial expressions and eccentric demeanour.
