What is Amazon Prime day?

Amazon Prime Day is the online retail giant’s annual sales event, when it slashes prices across all departments including electronics, entertainment, clothing and homeware.

It was originally launched in 2015 to celebrate Amazon's 20th birthday.

But it has grown to rival Black Friday or Cyber Monday as a shopping event and includes thousands of deals across Amazon products and ell-known brands.

Some discounts will be available throughout the entire two-day event, but other "lightning deals" are time-limited and will refresh regularly.

Our tips for finding the best deals this Amazon Prime Day

IT might be tempting to dive in and snap up LOADS of items, but here’s how you can guarantee you’re getting a good deal on Amazon.

PREPARE Research the items you want to buy and find out the cheapest price. Websites like PriceSpy, PriceHistory and CamelCamelCamel will give you historical data on prices so you can see how much you should pay. You can also set up price alerts to let you know when the cost drops.

CHECK CAREFULLY Use FakeSpot to check whether the item is genuine or not. The site scans the reviews to see if they're "reliable" or not so you can decide whther you trust the seller.

TRIAL IT FIRST Sign up to the 30 day Amazon Prime trial to take advantage of the Lightning Deals and free delivery. But remember to cancel the subscription before the trial is up or you'll be charged the full £79.

SHOP NOW TO SAVE TIME Put the items you want in your basket ahead of Black Friday so that when the deals drop on June 21, all you'll have to do is pay.

The deals are only available to members of Amazon Prime, and you can sign up online to unlock the discounts.

Amazon Prime costs £79 per year or £7.99 a month.

But if you haven’t had a membership in the past year you can register for a one month free trial of the Prime service.

Students can get a six-month free trial and a cheaper £3.99 monthly rate after that

Remember to cancel the membership before it renews to avoid being charged if you don’t want to continue with the subscription.

As well as the Prime Day sale, membership offers you access to free deliveries, food shopping and Amazon’s video streaming service.

There's no need to enter a code, as the discounts are already applied to sale items as long as you're signed in to your account.

When does Amazon Prime day end?

Amazon Prime Day is actually across two days this year, on June 21 and 22.

The discount bonanza kicked off first thing this morning and will end at midnight tomorrow.

But remember that lightning deals may end sooner, so double check if you have your eye on a particular product.

What deals are available this year?

Loads of well-known brands are slashing their prices on Prime Day,including Shark, Google and Nintendo.

Beauty brands such as Olay and Neutrogena have discounted goods, and you could grab a bargain on kids toys with Tommee Tippee and Lego taking part.
