Which Chelsea players will produce the most Dream Team points this season?

As the reigning European champions, Chelsea players are sure to be popular with Dream Team bosses ahead of the new season.

Thomas Tuchel has deep squad bursting with talent at his disposal and identifying which players will provide the most points can be tricky.

Starting from the back is a good idea since Chelsea ended 2020/21 with five defenders in the top ten while Edouard Mendy (£4.0m) finished with more points than any other goalkeeper.

A clean sheet in the Champions League final allowed the Senegal international to edge out Ederson (£4.0m).

Wing-backs Ben Chilwell (£4.5m) and Reece James (£4.5m) appear to be the best options as they are most likely to contribute with goals and assists on top of any clean sheets, especially in Tuchel’s preferred system.

The English pair combined for 403 points last term, making them by far and away the best full-back pair.

Marcos Alonso (£3.0m) briefly usurped Chilwell in the starting line-up but, while rotation is inevitable at times, the former Leicester left-back is expected to start the vast majority of games when fit.

Cesar Azpilicueta (£4.0m) and Antonio Rudiger (£4.0m) both overperformed against expectations for Dream Team gaffers last season and both would be suitable for those wanting to block out their defence full of Stamford Bridge residents.

In midfield, Mason Mount (£4.5m) seems to be the most sensible option.

Rotation means there’s risk in backing the out-and-out wingers while the likes of N’Golo Kante (£3.0m) and Jorginho (£3.0m) generally don’t enjoy Dream Team success even when in good form, purely because of their roles in the team – though the latter is good for a few penalties.

Christian Pulisic (£3.5m) has massive potential but has generally been a frustrating Dream Team asset so far, blowing hot and cold while being dogged by injuries.

Hakim Ziyech (£3.0m) has been on fire during the pre-season friendlies and currently has an ownership of just 1.8%.

Backing the Moroccan from the get-go might be a tad too bold but you’d be wise to monitor his progress closely.

Up front, you have to ask yourself whether you’re ready to be hurt by Timo Werner (£3.5m) again?

The German has the potential to go nuclear if he can improve his finishing.

He’s never been the most clinical forward but he reached new levels of wastefulness last season, mustering just six goals in the Premier League.

Only the absolute bravest Dream Team managers are backing Werner from the off – his ownership currently sits 6.7%.

Like Pulisic and Ziyech, he’s a player with sky-high potential when everything clicks but we’ve not seen him at his best for any substantial period of time just yet.

Last but by no means least is Kai Havertz (£4.0m).

The German’s stock is high after following up his winner in the Champions League final with an impressive showing at Euro 2020.

Reclassified as a forward in Dream Team for 2021/22, Havertz is expected to continue in the false nine role unless Roman Abramovich breaks the bank for Romelu Lukaku.

It was the change in position that facilitated a significant upturn in returns for Havertz last term as he finished with more points than Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£5.0m) despite a very quiet middle section of the season.

As a general note, it might be wise to wait a few weeks before stocking up on Chelsea assets.

Tuchel’s men have to play Arsenal, Liverpool, Spurs and Man City before the end of September before their fixtures become considerably more favourable.

The likes of Mendy, Chilwell, James and Mount could come alive in October when the Blues face Southampton, Brentford, Norwich and Newcastle.
