ADAM Johnson has died following a "freak accident" that took place during last night's game.

The fixture between his new team the Nottingham Panthers and the Sheffield Steelers had to be abandoned following the horrific collision.

Former NHL star Adam Johnson, 29, suffered a gash to his throat, according to witnesses.

The team said: "The Nottingham Panthers are truly devastated to announce that Adam Johnson has tragically passed away following a freak accident at the game in Sheffield last night."

    Adam Johnson's devastated mum has shared a heartbreaking tribute after the ice hockey star died in a freak "throat slash" accident.

    Posting on Facebook, his mum Kari said: "I lost half of my heart tonight."

    Yorkshire Ambulance attended the scene last night

    Yorkshire Ambulance Service said last night: "We were called at 8:21 this evening to the Sheffield Steelers game at Sheffield arena.

    "We attended a male and sent two ambulances and a critical care paramedic, and we sent one patient to hospital."

    Eye witnesses says players from both teams formed a ring around Johnson as apparently there was quite a lot of blood.

    Tributes have flooded in for Adam Johnson following the announcement of his death.

    One fan said on X: "RIP Adam – my thoughts are with you Nottingham."

    A second added: "Absolutely devastating news, thoughts go out to everyone involved with Panthers, Steelers and Adams family."

    All games postponed

    The Elite Ice Hockey League have confirmed that all scheduled fixtures for today have been postponed following the tragic news.

    In a statement they said: "The Elite Ice Hockey League is heartbroken to confirm that Nottingham Panthers forward Adam Johnson sadly passed away following a freak accident in Saturday’s game between Sheffield Steelers and Nottingham Panthers.

    "In light of this deeply upsetting news, the Elite League has postponed all games scheduled to take place on Sunday 29 October 2023.

    "The thoughts and condolences of everyone connected with the EIHL are with Adam's family, friends and team mates at this incredibly sad and difficult time. We would also ask everyone to respect the privacy of Adam’s family at this time.

    "Many of us will have found Saturday’s events very distressing. Please take care of yourselves, and each other."

    Adam Johnson's early life

    The forward was born in Hibbing, Minnesota, and started his professional career with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in 2017-18 in the American Hockey League, scoring 31 points in the regular season.

    He spent three years in total with the Pennsylvania-based side, contributing 139 points in league and playoff action.

    His performances saw him called up to Pittsburgh where he netted four points in 13 matches over two years and scored the Penguins' third goal in a 7-4 victory at Minnesota Wild in October 2019.

    In 2020-21, he played in the SHL – the top level in Sweden – scoring 12 points before going back to the AHL.
