Colorado State men’s basketball coach Niko Medved has reportedly signed his second contract extension in as many seasons, with the latest keeping him in Fort Collins through 2027.
Per Stadium’s Jeff Goodman, the 47-year-old Medved and CSU athletic department agreed to add another season to his contract after inking a three-year extension last November.
Following a pair of successful Division-I rebuilds, Medved has led another rapid turnaround with CSU since arriving on campus with a five-year deal in 2018. The Rams have improved their winning percentage in each of his first three seasons in building a 51-38 overall record.
In 2019-20, the green and gold followed a 12-20 (7-11 Mountain West) campaign by going 20-12 (11-7) and finishing fifth in the MW.
A year later, the Rams posted the best single-season league record (14-4) in program history en route to a third-place MW finish and were squarely on the NCAA Tournament bubble at 18-6 overall. CSU eventually accepted a bid to the NIT and reached the semifinals before finishing 20-8.
Medved’s second extension comes after his name was attached to various Power-5 head coach openings last spring. That included reports of Minnesota’s interest in hiring the Minneapolis native.
In Medved’s first head-coaching stint, he transformed Furman (2013-17) from a 9-21 squad into a Southern Conference-winning, 23-11 group in just four years. In one season with Drake (2017-18), he led the Bulldogs to a respectable 17-17 campaign.
With CSU returning its entire roster for the 2021-22 season — headlined by the junior tandem of forward David Roddy and guard Isaiah Stevens — expectations are high.
