Sevilla tell Newcastle to stump up another £12.5m for Diego Carlos.. because they spent £25m on Chris Wood transfer

NEWCASTLE have been dealt a blow in their attempts to sign Sevilla star Diego Carlos.

The centre-back, 28, has been one of Toon's top transfer targets this month.

But after having two bids for Carlos rejected Sevilla have decided to keep the Brazilian, reports transfer guru Fabrizio Romano.

The Spanish outfit is playing hardball as they know Newcastle have money to spend and are willing to spend over the odds – evidenced by the £25million spent on Chris Wood.

Newcastle have not given up but were reportedly set a £40m asking price by Sevilla.

But Romano claims Sevilla have no intention of selling Carlos in the final few days of the transfer window.

After all, they are in a title race and there is little time left in the window to find a replacement.

It is a major setback for the Magpies who have already failed to sign another defender this month – Lille star Sven Botman.

Now Eddie Howe could turn to other targets such as Burnley's James Tarkowski or unused Liverpool centre-back Nat Phillips.

Burnley could also prove tricky to deal with in negotiations given how they lost Wood to Newcastle – so Toon may have to pay over the odds again.

Meanwhile, Jesse Lingard's loan move to the north-east is on the verge of collapse due to Manchester United demanding a loan fee Newcastle are unwilling to pay.
