We could be finally waving goodbye to 2021 in pleasant climes this weekend as forecasters predict the mildest New Years Eve on record.
Temperatures are expected to climb as high as 15C for the big day as Brits await the difficult decision over whether to go out amid high Omicron cases across the nation.
The weather event comes only a few days after snow fell on Christmas Day in Yorkshire and Scotland.
Met Office meteorologist Greg Dewhurst told Sky News: "The record is 14.8C on New Year's Eve and that was in 2011, temperatures look like they'll be 14 to 15C (57.2-59F) so it is possible that temperatures could be that value."
"We're going to see across the whole of the country, through the rest of this week, temperatures that are above average for this time of year.
"The average temperature in the UK around this time of year should be around 7-8C (44.6-46.4F)."
It comes as bookies have slashed odds to 10/11 for a record-breaking hot New Year's Eve, having been just a 5/1 shot last week.
Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: "While snow was on the cards last week, it's all change on the weather front, and it now looks like this month could play host to a record-breaking hot New Year's Eve."
However, apotentially historical weather event is expected to be followed by a bitter cold spell.
Up to 25 more days of cold weather disruption were forecast in the North, with up to 15 days in the South, said The Weather Company, the world’s biggest commercial forecaster.
In the meantime, the Met Office forecast for December 28 sees the day start cloudy with rain and showers, with strong winds in the south
Freezing fog will also begin to clear from areas in the far north of the UK after several days of limited visibility. No weather warnings are in place.
