British paedophile, 46, who fled the UK to avoid sentencing for child pornography is arrested in Thai ‘sex capital’ after eight years on the run

  • William Dempster, 46, was convicted of child porn offences in Scotland in 2014
  • He posted bail and fled before sentencing, before being tracked to Thailand
  • Thai police found Dempster living in notorious ‘Sin City’ of Pattaya on May 30
  • He will now be deported back to Lanarkshire where he is facing a jail term

A British man who fled the country after being found guilty of possessing child porn has been caught living in Thailand.

William Dempster, 46, from Lanarkshire in Scotland, was convicted in May 2014 but posted bail and disappeared before he could be sentenced.

But he has since been tracked to Thailand’s notorious ‘Sin City’ of Pattaya where he was found living on May 30 and re-arrested.

William Dempster, 46, from Lanarkshire in Scotland, has been arrested in Thailand after eight years on the run following a conviction on child porn charges

Video showed a sweating and visibly-nervous Dempster being interrogated by Thai officers outside his house in the city’s Bang Lamung district last week.

Police Colonel Boonlue Phadungthin said the arrest came following a joint investigation between Scotland Yard and Thai police.

The officer said: ‘The suspect was previously arrested by Scotland Yard police in England on charges of producing, having in possession and disseminating child pornographic material between 2008 and 2013.

‘He was released on bail during the legal process but fled to Thailand where he had been staying for more than eight years.’

The Scotland Police, Royal Thai Police, immigration officers, and National Crime Agency worked together to trace where Dempster was living.

Dempster was found to be overstaying his Thai visa as well as absconding on a warrant, police said.

He will now be deported from Thailand back to Scotland where he faces jail.

Police Colonel Boonlue Phadungthin added: ‘This arrest is a success for the co-operation between Thai police and British police.

‘It shows that foreign criminals cannot use Thailand as a safe destination.’

Pattaya is a notorious city on the east coast of Thailand that has been dubbed a modern-day Sodom and Gomorrah following the explosion in adult nightlife venues since the 1970s.

It has also become a haven for foreign criminals, corruption and boiler room gangs.
