Prince Charles will not allow his grandson Archie to be a prince because he wants a slimmed down monarchy, it has been claimed.
Traditionally a grandchild of the sovereign has the right to be a prince, though Charles is believed to want to strip back the frontline royals when he becomes the monarch.
According to a source close to the couple, Charles told Prince Harry and Meghan Markle that he will alter legal documents to make sure he will not be able to acquire the title.
The source told the Mail on Sunday: ““Harry and Meghan were told Archie would never be a Prince, even when Charles became King.”
The full details of Charles’ plan for the slimmed-down Monarchy have not been revealed, but speculation suggests that only heirs to the throne and immediate family members will be granted full titles, financial support from the Sovereign Grant and taxpayer-funded police protection.
This would also place the Duke of York’s daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie in jeopardy to lose their titles, financial support and security.
A source close to the couple confirmed that they had expected Archie to be name a Prince once his grandfather ascended to the throne and their spokesman went as far as reiterating to journalists that Archie’s right to the title was ‘fact’, not speculative.
The Sussexes became aware of this bombshell news just before their interview with Oprah Winfrey where the couple claimed an unnamed member of the Royal Family questioned what colour Archie’s skin tone would be.
A source said: “This is what nobody realised from the interview. The real thing was that Charles was going to take active steps to strip Archie of his ultimate birthright.”
An insider said: “Charles has never made any secret of the fact that he wants a slimmed-down Monarchy when he becomes King.
“He realises that the public don't want to pay for a huge Monarchy and, as he said, the balcony at Buckingham Palace would probably collapse.”
A Royal source said last night: 'We are not going to speculate about the succession or comment on rumours coming out of America.'
A spokesperson for Harry and Meghan have been contacted for comment.
Clarence House refused to comment.
