Donald Trump and family watch on ahead of Washington riots

However, the 43-year-old’s chances are likely to have been damaged by the disorder which engulfed Washington on January 6, when thousands of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol after being whipped up by the billionaire at a rally minutes earlier, Dr Sinead McEneaney said. Don Jr has hinted at a possible tilt at the White House in the past, even posing in front a banner proclaiming “Don Jr. 2024” while campaigning for his father in the run-up to November’s election, in which Mr Trump was defeated by Joe Biden by more than seven million votes.

Dr McEneaney, a lecturer in history at the Open University, suggested Don Jr was better equipped than his 39-year-old sister when it came to connecting with the kind of people who backed their father – while simultaneously voicing her doubts

She told Express.co.uk: “I think that if you had asked these questions before January 6, the answers would have been quite different.

“Pre-January, polls showed surprising levels of backing for a 2024 run by Donald Trump Jr.

“I suspect this may have changed after the release of the video of him partying as his father encouraged supporters to march on the Capitol.”

However, she added: “What Donald Jr shares with his father is a canny use of social media, especially for disinformation.

“He also shares his father’s abrasive, often quite aggressive, offensive personality.”

Comparing the two siblings, she said: “I would suspect that he might fancy his chances at elected office more even than Ivanka.

“Quite a lot will depend on what kind of information emerges about Trump and his family as the impeachment trial proceeds, and as the inevitable insider-accounts of the Trump White House start to be published.”

Donald Trump Jr has been coy about his future ambitions, despite sharing a picture of the banner on his Instagram account in October.

He commented: “Hahahahaha. Oh boy. This was a sign I saw up at the Fallon Nevada Livestock Auction.

“This will make the lib heads explode. To whomever made that thanks for the compliment… but let’s get through 2020 with a big win first!!!!”

Dr McEneaney’s remark was a reference to a party thrown by Mr Trump after his incendiary speech prior to the insurrection earlier this month, at which Don Jr was shown laughing and joking with fellow attendees.

After Mr Trump quit the White House Wednesday, Don Jr tweeted: “Donald Trump is the first president in modern history[sic] did not start a new war.”

Former Estonian President former Estonia president Toomas Hendrik Ilves hit back, bizarrely branding the younger Trump “an exceptionally small-brained fish”.

The elder Trump is facing an impeachment trial in the Senate for his part in inciting the riots.

Five people, including one police officer, died in the mayhem which followed his speech.
