Ghislaine Maxwell ‘has lost millions in jewels and property’ after £4.5m home is sold… Now she tells her friends she is so broke she might have to represent HERSELF in court

Ghislaine Maxwell is so broke she may have to represent herself in her legal appeal against her conviction on child sex-trafficking charges, it was claimed last night.
The disgraced socialite has told friends she is penniless and has no money to hire lawyers.
Maxwell’s former marital home in Manchester-by-the-Sea in Massachusetts was sold last week for £4.5 million but it is unlikely that she will see a penny from the sale.
While she alleges that her money was used originally to buy the property, it was in the name of a company controlled by her ex-husband Scott Borgerson, who has always insisted she has no ownership in it.
To add to her woes, she claims that around $1 million (£780,000) worth of her jewellery previously ‘disappeared’ from another property in New Hampshire.

Maxwell, now 61, was arrested there, at remote Tuckedaway in Bedford, in July 2020.
A source said: ‘Ghislaine’s jewellery has vanished. The FBI broke down the doors when she was arrested and the house was trampled through by who knows who?
‘There were security people, maids, cops, the FBI. All she knows is that a million dollars worth of jewels have disappeared.’
Last year Borgerson, 47, said he was selling the couple’s marital home because it was linked with ‘ugly’ memories. The house, 25 miles north of Boston, is owned by Tidewood LLC, a limited liability company controlled by tech executive Borgerson.

Brian Basham, a spokesman for the Maxwell family, confirmed that she had no stake in the property, although Maxwell’s friends insist she used money from the sale of her New York townhouse to purchase the home in 2016 for $2.45 million (£1.7 million) .
‘Ghislaine has not a penny left,’ a source said last night.
The sale of the house in Manchester-by-the-Sea went through last Wednesday. With seven bedrooms, seven bathrooms, 1.5 acres of land and access to a private beach, it had been listed at more than $7 million (£5.5 million) before the price was dropped.
Maxwell was accused of ‘pimping’ for former lover Jeffrey Epstein and helping him obtain under-age girls for sexual services. She was convicted in 2021 and sentenced to 20 years in jail. She continues to deny the charges and is in the process of appealing her conviction.
She now faces the prospect of spearheading her appeal from behind bars at the Federal Correctional Institution, Tallahassee.
One source said: ‘She’s incredibly bright. Obviously she doesn’t want to have to represent herself but if there is no money to pay lawyers she could end up fronting her own appeal.’
The appeal is expected to go all the way to the US Supreme Court.Maxwell claims she was prosecuted only after convicted paedophile Epstein took his own life in jail in August 2019 as he awaited prosecution on multiple child sex charges.
‘If Epstein had lived, Ghislaine would never be where she is today,’ a friend said. ‘It is very telling that of all the people in Epstein’s world, she is the only person in jail.’
Under US law, once her appeal is completed – and if she loses – she can apply to be extradited and serve out her term in a UK prison, something she intends to pursue.
