National Lottery reveals ‘luckiest day of the year’ coming up this week

More National Lottery millionaires have been made on one day in January than any other day of the year.

According to the Lotto giant, January 4 has made it to the top spot, as its the most popular day for winning millions.

Analysis of the day that each of The National Lottery’s 5,900 millionaires had their tickets validated has revealed that early January is the period that's luckiest.

January 4 topped the list, but they also revealed that the 2nd and 3rd of the same month made it to the sixth and seventh spot in the top 10 list, making the first week of January the luckiest week on record.

And it looks like there's lucks in the J's, as July is the other lucky month, with the 30th and 31st of the month taking the second and third spots in the list.

July 29 also made the top 10 list, in tenth place.

After waving goodbye to the awful year that was 2020, the New Year is kicking off with huge prizes in the Lotto, with January 9 offering a £20m prize.

It's also a "must be won" draw, meaning that if no-one matches six main numbers to win the jackpot, the prize rolls down and is shared by all cash winners so they win even bigger prizes.

The 2020 festive period has seen a wealth of big winners made across National Lottery games, with a giant EuroMillions jackpot of £39.7m claimed by a UK player after the draw on New Year’s Day.

The first week of January has always been a huge week for winners, seeing millionaires made over the years, one of which being Sue Schofield who bagged £1m in the EuroMillions Millionaire Maker on January 3, 2013.

On January 2, 2003, Trish Emson banked a fabulous £1.7m whilst Barry and Roberta Little won £1m in 2013 and Amo Riselli took home a whopping £24m win in 2018.

The top 10 millionaire-making days are:

  1. January 4
  2. July 30
  3. July 31
  4. December 29
  5. August 1
  6. January 3
  7. January 2
  8. August 2
  9. June 1
  10. July 29

Camelot’s Andy Carter, Senior Winners’ Advisor at The National Lottery, said, “Our winners who have won on the luckiest day have managed to start their new years in style, and a lot richer!

"Whenever we have big draws, my team has to be ready for a wealth of millionaire making and, with a guaranteed £20M Lotto jackpot which has to be won this Saturday, we are looking forward to paying out more big winners in 2021.
