It may have been named the nation’s favourite chocolate last year, but Ferrero Rocher fans may find their top treat hard to come by – or more expensive – this Christmas.
Low rainfall and insect problems in Turkey are threatening supplies of a key ingredient – hazelnuts.
Some 70 per cent of the world’s crop comes from the country.
The shortage has led to prices soaring 40 per cent in the eight weeks to the end of September.

A Turkish trader told analysts Mintec: ‘We went to speak to farmers and they all said the harvest would be much smaller than last year.
‘We are seeing the effects of global warming, insect damage and, in particular, a lack of rainfall during the critical nut development period in May.’
Italian-owned confectionery firm Ferrero also uses hazelnuts in its Nutella spread.
Ferrero Rocher consists of whole roasted nuts encased in a hazelnut spread, covered with milk chocolate and chopped nuts.
Trade magazine The Grocer warned the shortage and price rises could become ‘a problem for big hazelnut buyers like Ferrero’. Its product was named the Britain’s favourite in a survey for an online retailer last July.
