Three people have been killed and at least 50 injured after a train crashed into a truck.

The Amtrak train was travelling from Los Angeles to Chicago in the US when it was derailed after hitting a dustbin lorry that was blocking a public crossing, the Daily Mirror reports.

The crash left two people on the train dead, as well as one person in the truck, as the train came completely off the tracks near the small town of Mendon in the state of Missouri at around 12.42pm local time (6.42pm UK time) on Monday afternoon (June 27).

There were 243 passengers and 12 crew onboard the train at the time of impact.

Shocking pictures taken at the scene by shaken survivors showed eight carriages carrying hundreds of people on their side.

Videos shot by shocked passengers also showed them sitting on the side of the derailed carriages as they waited for help.

One of the passengers recorded footage from the accident and said uninjured travellers were taken to a nearby school after the crash.

He wrote: "So thankful for the people here, safely at the Northwestern high school near Mendon. This town pulled together to help everyone."

Another passenger Robert Nightingale, who was having a nap on the service when the crash happened, told CNN: "It all happened like slow motion. It started to rock and rock, and then flicker, and then, just all of a sudden, all this dust was through my window. It hit something major to cause… every car to go off."

Students from Pleasant Ridge High School in Easton, Kansas, are known to be among the passengers.

Mendon only has a population of about 160 residents and lies just over 84 miles north of Kansas City.

Injured patients were taken to a University of Missouri Health Care hospital in Columbia about 90 miles away with several arriving by helicopter.

The derailment came just one day after three women were killed when another Amtrak train crashed into a car at a crossing in Brentwood, California.
