The country has basked in glorious sunshine at the start of this week as coronavirus lockdown restrictions are eased in a major move to provide 67 million Britons with much more freedom following a year of intense frustration. Maximum temperatures today (Tuesday) are in double figures for most of the country, peaking as high as 15C across large areas of southern and central England. But the latest weather maps from WXCHARTS reveal thermometers are set to plummet wildly throughout the remainder of the month, increasing fears of a return of the deep freeze.
These temperatures are set to plunge as soon as Wednesday, with the mercury just about edging into double figures, falling to as low as 8C in the North East and just 10C around London.
There is forecast to be a slight bounce back on Thursday, with temperatures edging up slightly to a maximum of 12C throughout much of the country, and as high as 14C in some areas of northern England.
This weather trend is set to continue on Friday and throughout the course of this weekend, with temperatures remaining in double figures throughout most of the UK and rising to 15C in some areas further north.
However, Britons will be fearing the worst at the start of next week, with a bitterly cold snap quickly making an unwelcome return, the charts suggest.
On Monday 26 April, temperatures will dip slightly to 12C throughout much of the country and a high of 14C in small parts of northern England, before the mercury suddenly plunges again next Tuesday.
Thermometers are forecast to struggle to break into double-figure temperatures, hitting just 10C throughout much of southern England and as low as 5C further north and a bitterly cold 4C throughout much of Scotland.
The late-April freeze will only worsen further over the course of next week and running up to the end of the month, with temperatures forecast to plummet to as low as 4C in parts of north-west England, Wales and Scotland.
And, temperatures in the early hours of the morning on Friday 30 April are expected to fall to freezing in parts of Scotland and just 1C-2C widely across much of the country.
Looking forward to the period April 25 until May 4, the Met Office said: “A settled regime will likely be in place across much of the country at first with high pressure likely to be centred to the west or northwest of the UK during this time.
“However, there is the threat of some rain and a few showers in the North and East.
“There’s a small chance more unsettled conditions with heavier showers could move up from the south to impact southern areas.
“There are the continued threats of rural frost and patchy fog where winds fall light.

“Temperatures become quite uncertain depending on where the high resides, particularly in the east where temperatures are likely to struggle above average.
“Warmer days are most likely to be further inland towards the south and west.”
For the two weeks following until May 18, the Met Office has forecast “plenty of sunny spells” and although there could be sustained periods of rain, temperatures are set to return to average for this time of year, “with the possibility of some warmer spells”.
The forecaster said: “The UK will likely see spells of fine, dry weather at times with fair-weather cloud and plenty of sunny spells, as well as an increased likelihood of more unsettled periods when compared to April.
“All areas expected to see showers or longer spells of rain at times.
“Temperatures are likely to be close to the average for the time of year, with the possibility of some warmer spells.”
