The nation’s public health institute announced on Monday the United Kingdom is no longer considered an area “of variant concern”. It prompted the lifting of a travel ban and easing of travel rules imposed on Britons.

The UK downgraded from the highest alert “virus variant area” to the second-highest level – a “high-incidence area”.

Other countries that have seen the travel ban lifted following the downgrade are Russia, India and Portugal.

Fully-vaccinated Britons, or those who have antibodies to the disease, will be allowed to travel to Germany quarantine-free.

Unvaccinated travellers will be able to end self-isolation after five days with proof of a negative Covid test.

The health body stated on its website: “If you have spent time in a high incidence area prior to entry, the relevant test may not be conducted earlier than five days after entry.”

The change will come into force from Wednesday, July 7.

The decision follows Chancellor Angela Merkel’s trip to the UK last week, where she met the Prime Minister at his country residence of Chequers.

On Friday, Boris Johnson hosted Ms Merkel for a bilateral meeting as part of the Chancellor’s last visit to the UK before stepping down.

Ms Merkel had previously been lobbying for the European Union to ban UK tourists from travelling to the bloc for holidays.

During last week’s meeting, Mr Johnson pressed Ms Merkel to drop the proposals.

The German Chancellor told a press conference: “Let me point out yet again, it is not only Germany that has imposed restrictions.

“The United Kingdom too has done quite a lot to protect its own citizens and that is a continuous learning process that we undergo.

“We have to adjust it time and again to the most recent developments.”
