A RUNNING club has been slammed as woke over plans to hand out “invisible medals” in a bid to be greener.
Until now, it has given real gongs to those completing its 10k annual event.
But it has now announced new “unique medals which will be invisible” to save them having to be manufactured and shipped to the UK from China.
One runner at Leigh-on-Sea Striders in Essex blasted: “Runners all love getting a T-shirt and a medal at the end of an event — alongside a personal best, it’s one of the traditions of running events that we all enjoy.
This sounds like a bit of woke tokenism to me.
“Most people will be driving their cars to get to the 10k.
“Perhaps they’d be better off telling the runners to use green transport to get there.”
Another added: “The idea of being more sustainable, I think, is good but runners, like me, do love a medal.”
The club instead plans to hand out vouchers after the January 2 charity event.
It said in a statement: “After 11 years of running this event we are taking a more sustainable approach and among many other aspects, our unique medals will be invisible.
“Instead we will have something a little more useable for everyone who crosses the line.”
