The 76-year-old Asian woman who fought back against an assailant in San Francisco plans to donate the more than $900,000 she raised on GoFundMe to the Asian-American community to help fight racism.
Xiao Zhen Xie was one of two elderly Asians allegedly attacked recently by Steven Jenkins, a 39-year old white man, while waiting to cross a street.
She became an international hero when she fought back after being punched – picking up a stick and striking the younger man, yelling, “You bum! Why did you hit me?”
“She insists on making this decision saying this is bigger than Her,” her grandson John Chen said in an update posted to the GoFundMe campaign, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
As of Wednesday morning, the crowdfunding campaign has raised almost $934,000 of its $50,000 goal. More than 31,000 people have donated.
Chen said his grandmother believed the money must be donated “back to the Asian American community to combat racism.”
“This is my grandma, grandpa and our family’s decision,” he said. “We hope everyone can understand our decision.”
Chen did not say which organizations might receive the donated funds.
“When we visited our grandma yesterday and today her overall mental and physical health has improved,” the family said in a revised statement on the fundraiser’s page Monday.
“Her eye is no longer swelled to the point of not being able to open it. She is now starting to feel optimistic again and is in better spirits. She said we must not summit to racism and we must fight to the death if necessary.”
Jenkins has been charged with two counts of assault likely to produce great bodily injury, two counts of battery with serious bodily injury and two counts of elder abuse, according to People magazine.
Meanwhile, a GoFundMe campaign for the other victim of Jenkin’s alleged attack that day, Ngoc Pham, 83, has raised more than $285,000 by Wednesday morning. Its initial goal was $25,000.
