The gallery closed its doors in March 2020, and has undergone the biggest transformation in it’s history.

With new doors incorporating 45 carved brass panels, representing ‘every woman, throughout time’.

The Princess of Wales chatted all things art with Sir Paul McCartney as she opened the gallery earlier in the morning.

She had a fit of the giggles as ‘Macca’, 81, who has his own photographic exhibition opening there next week focusing on The Beatles in 1963 to 64, joked about whether his wife would have been born then.

At 63, she would have been born in 1959 and reassured him she had been.

Upon arrival this morning, the Princess stuck to the theme of the occasion and opted for a £450 Self Portrait white midi dress with a pleated skirt and a white boucle tweed jacket as she arrived at the National Portrait Gallery.

Beaming as she arrived, the mother-of-three opted for simple pearl teardrop earrings and wore her thick brunette locks down in a bouncy blow-dry.

She opted for her black £620 Aquazzura pumps, which are also favoured by the Duchess of Sussex.

‘It’s amazing how long the planning is, how many conversations happen pre everything,’ Kate replied. ‘That’s true,’ the star said.

Explaining more about his exhibition, McCartney said it focused on a very specific period, 1963 to 1964. ‘When you weren’t even born’, he said, smiling, to the royal.

The model was spotted grocery shopping with her 37-year-old boyfriend in Notting Hill on Monday, during which she wore a gold ring on her engagement finger while she was also seen on pal Pixie Geldof’s Instagram story with the ring on show.

While stepping out, Alexa was looking typically edgy with a battered leather jacket and loose-fitting jeans, while Tom also went for indie cool.

Tom, who stars in Netflix fantasy drama series The Sandman, was previously engaged to actress Sienna Miller, 41, with whom he has daughter, Marlowe, 10.

The son of award-winning film director Charles Sturridge, Tom seems open to marriage, while Alexa for her part, previously mused: ‘I just don’t get why marriage is different from non-marriage — I just don’t get it.’

Her spokesperson declined to comment. The couple went public with their romance last July when they attended day seven of the Wimbledon Championships.

In a nod to their very unique set-up, in their first public outing, they were joined by Sienna, who looked joyous while sitting in front of the couple.

Tom and Sienna previously dated for four years and split in 2015. They are still on good terms, with Sienna calling Tom her ‘best friend’.

She has given her seal of approval for her ex and Alexa and in December told Vogue UK: ‘I’m really happy for them. It’s genuinely lovely.

The Layer Cake actress even joked about their co-parenting situation and revealed that their daughter Marlowe has brought one of Alexa’s jumpers home, which she has since claimed for herself. Sienna quipped: ‘I’ve got one upstairs!’

Alexa meanwhile has enjoyed a slew of high-profile romances.

Her exes include Alex Turner, Alexander Skarsgård, Orson Fry, Albert Hammond Jr., Faris Badwan, Faris Badwan and Theo Hutchcraft.

In 2018, she spoke to Porter about marriage, saying: ‘I just don’t get why marriage is different from non-marriage — I just don’t get it … I think having a partner in life must be quite nice but I don’t need a wedding day per se’.
