Bake Off bosses’ unlikely request to Alison Hammond in order to land job

Great British Bake Off teaser trailer

The Great British Bake Off’s newest addition, Alison Hammond, has opened up on the unusual audition process she underwent to land a presenting role on the show.

The 48-year-old mum of one has replaced Matt Lucas as Noel Fielding’s co-presenter on the hugely popular baking competition, but she has now revealed she had a far from traditional job interview.

Seemingly, show bosses wanted to get a sense of her ability to small talk to guage how she would handle spontaneous chats with the contestants on the show, so they came up with a novel way to test this.

“For the second audition, I went to a garden centre to see if I could speak to random people,” the This Morning host recalled.

“The dreamiest people came my way. I met a couple who were both 93 and I asked them the secret of a successful marriage, and they gave me advice,” she recollected to this week’s Radio Times.

Alison has previously appeared on Bake Off on the other side of the table as a contestant on The Great Celebrity Bake Off for Stand Up to Cancer, back in 2020.

She proved to have prowess with a wooden spoon as her brownies wowed judge Prue Leith, whom she will now be working alongside.

Despite this, she admits that hosting the show wasn’t even something she considered until fans on social media started calling for it.

“The first time I even thought about the job was when Matt Lucas left and Twitter went berserk about me taking his role,” she confessed.

Channel 4 recently shared a first look at Alison on the show in a teaser trailer for the upcoming series, which returns on Tuesday 26 September.

The short clip follows eggs, with smiley faces drawn on them, making their way into the famous Bake Off tent before they are whisked up and turned into an appealing dessert with flour, butter and chocolate.

Alongside the eggs are grinning raspberries which are placed on top of a delicious cake before the show’s newest recruit, Alison, and her co-stars tuck into the sweet treat.

You can read Alison Hammond’s full interview in this week’s Radio Times.
