Bobby Brazier’s dance for his ‘superhero’ mum Jade Goody moves judge Shirley Ballas to tears on Strictly
There have been some heartwrenching moments on Strictly during its 19-year history.
But none more so than Bobby Brazier’s emotional tribute to his late mother Jade Goody last night, which reduced head judge Shirley Ballas to tears.
The model and actor picked for his Couple’s Choice the hit This Woman’s Work by Maxwell, a cover version of a song by Kate Bush, which he says reminds him of losing his mum in 2009.
Speaking before he took to the floor with partner Dianne Buswell, Brazier said: ‘For me, the perfect song. He sings: ‘I should be crying but I just can’t let it go’ – it’s so beautiful. The story that we are going to tell, simply put, is my mum and I.
‘My mum was Jade Goody, she was a famous TV personality. When she passed away it changed my life completely. I would love to spend the day with her, see where I get my smile from. In my earliest memory, I remember thinking, ‘She’s a superhero.’

Brazier described it as ‘the perfect song’ before taking to the dance floor with partner Dianne Buswell
Strictly sources say that after Brazier was in the bottom two last Sunday he knew his time on the show might be coming to an end so he wanted to ensure he had a chance to perform the dance
‘My intention isn’t to give anyone some kind of answer, it’s just to tell a story, make people feel empowered. This dance isn’t only for my family, it is a tribute to my mum.’
Brazier and Ms Buswell were awarded 37 out of 40 from the judges. The star’s father Jeff Brazier, who raised him after Ms Goody’s death, said: ‘As a family we are very tight. Loss makes you grow closer. I’m the lucky one, I’m the one who gets to bring the boys up, I’m the one who gets to watch him on Strictly. It brings so much joy to my life and I’m very grateful for that. He’s a walking tribute to his mum.’

Brazier said of the tune: ‘My dad used to play it when I was young and it was really impactful for me.’

Three weeks ago Annabel Croft paid tribute to her late husband Mel Coleman, who died in May following a short battle with cancer. Last night she and her partner Johannes Radebe danced the paso doble, earning 36 points.
Nigel Harman and Katya Jones scored 33 for their rumba to It’s All Coming Back To Me Now by Celine Dion, while Ellie Leach and Vito Coppola impressed with their tango to Destiny’s Child and were awarded 38 points.
Before the show, EastEnders actor Harman said he would be ‘doomed’ doing a raunchy rumba, but his display drew ringing praise.
Anton Du Beke called his performance ‘superduper’ and applauded Harman for trying to dance with his partner, instead of letting her perform around him.
