The film was adapted from the 1963 novel Silent Witness by Robert L. Fish, following McQueen’s Frank Bullitt, a hard-nosed San Francisco detective.

The story follows Bullitt as he tries to track down the crime kingpin who killed the witness who was under his protection.

The film also stars Jacqueline Bisset, Robert Vaughn, Don Gordon, Robert Duvall and Norman Fell, and features arguably one of the greatest cinematic car chases ever.

Spielberg will direct from a screenplay by Josh Singer (The Post, First Man), with both Spielberg and Cooper also producing with Kristie Macosko Krieger (West Side Story).

Chad McQueen and Molly McQueen, the son and granddaughter of Steve McQueen, who passed away at the age of 50 in 1980, are on board as executive producers.

This will be the first project where Spielberg will direct Cooper, but they have come close to collaborating in the past.

Spielberg was originally supposed to direct Cooper in the 2015 film American Sniper, before bowing out and Clint Eastwood taking the helm.

Spielberg had also been developing Maestro, a biopic on Leonard Cohen, for many years, but after seeing Cooper’s work in front of and behind the camera in his directorial debut, A Star Is Born, Spielberg was convinced Cooper should both play Cohen and direct the film.

Maestro is currently in post-production on Maestro – with Spielberg on board as a producer with Macosko Krieger – which is slated for release in 2023 on Netflix.

Bullitt made headlines a few years back, when the two original 1968 Ford Mustang GT’s used in the production had surfaced.

The first car – which was used predominantly for the chase scene and was severely damaged – resurfaced in Mexico and is now undergoing a full restoration.

The second car – which was used for lighter driving – had been in storage for decades, with McQueen himself trying to buy the car back in 1977 but refused.

It was showcased by Ford for the 50th Anniversary of Bullitt in 2018 and sold for $3.7 million to an unidentified buyer in 2020.
