Chris Evans reveals the real reason why he walked away from Captain America and why he might turn his back on Hollywood for good
Chris Evans has spoken out on why he walked away from his multi-million dollar contract as Marvel’s Captain America.
The actor, 42, gained huge recognition and became one of the highest paid film stars in Hollywood, before he stepped down after Avengers: Endgame in 2019.
Now in an interview with GQ Magazine for their October issue, Chris reflects on his decision to hang up his superhero mask and why he may turn his back on the industry for good.
The actor says: ‘I was really apprehensive about taking the role initially. I I remember in my late 20s having a real shift in how I felt on set, how I felt promoting films: a little more anxiety, a little more uncertainty.
‘You always end up questioning, Is this what I should be doing?’

Chris says as his fame grew so did his anxiety, which at times became crippling.
Eventually he moved out of Los Angeles and back to his hometown just outside Boston, Massachusetts.
He says: ‘I just wasn’t sure if I was moving closer to myself or further away. And something inside me kept saying that I was getting further away— that something about this industry wasn’t healthy.
Of the upheaval to return to where he grew up, Chris adds: ‘[It] takes me back to a place when life was not just simpler – that’s too reductive – but to a time where I was more pure, I guess; where my ego and my insecurities weren’t such a dominant force that I had to push against.’
Chris nearly quit acting due to severe anxiety, which was exacerbated by the magnitude of the iconic blockbuster franchise.
Asked if he would ever returns to the Marvel Universe, Chris replies: ‘I’ll never say never, just because it was such a wonderful experience. But I’m also very precious with it. It’s something that I am very proud of.
‘And like I said, sometimes I can’t believe it even happened. And I wouldn’t want the black eye if it felt like a cash grab or if it didn’t live up to expectations or if it just felt like it wasn’t connected to that original thing.’

Second wedding! It’s been a time of exciting change for Chris, who has tied the knot with actress Alba Baptista, 26, over the weekend
The worldwide fame has had an impact on Chris who admits he is having doubts about whether he wants to continue acting.
He says: ‘I could just make furniture for nobody and be happy. I don’t want to waste too much time in this industry, but that doesn’t really feel…. That doesn’t sound correct. I don’t want to occupy too much space in an industry that I’ve already poured 20 years into.
‘Sometimes I wonder if I’m lacking some sort of—like, I think I’m a very driven person. I have a lot of energy. I wake up early, I get a lot done in a day, but it’s not always focused on acting. Sometimes reading a script is the last thing I want to do.’
It’s been a time of exciting change for Chris, who tied the knot with actress Alba Baptista, 26, over the weekend.
A source revealed that the pair’s wedding was ‘locked down tight’ and attendees were asked to ‘sign NDAs and phones were forfeited,’ according to Page Six.
The insider also revealed that the happy couple’s star-studded guest list included his Marvel co-stars, like Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth and Jeremy Renner.
Additionally, John Krasinski, his wife Emily Blunt, Elsa Pataky and Susan Downey were seen ‘in nearby Boston for the wedding,’ according to People.
The couple are reportedly planning to say ‘I do’ once again.
The Captain America star and the actress will have a second wedding celebration in Baptista’s native Portugal, as per Page Six.
The event will allow a number of her family members, who couldn’t make it to the American wedding on Saturday, celebrate the occasion with the newlyweds.
‘There is going to be a second gathering in Portugal for members of Alba’s family who couldn’t be in Massachusetts,’ a source told the publication.
‘Sometime this week, I believe. Then they’ll depart from Portugal for their honeymoon.’
In January, Evans officially confirmed his relationship with Alba in a cute video in which he and his love were trying to scare each other.
In the caption he said he was looking back on 2022 as he added three red heart emojis that made it clear he had love for the budding star.
The October issue of British GQ is available via digital download and on newsstands on September 26th.
