WHAT IS THE COP26 CONFERENCE?
The COP26 conference, also known as the United Nations Climate Change Conference, is an annual global summit focusing on climate change and how countries around the world can tackle it.
This year’s event is taking place at the SEC Centre in Glasgow, Scotland and will run from 31 October and 12 November 2021.
The COP26 website adds that the summit will ‘bring parties together to accelerate action towards the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. ‘
The event is attended by those countries that countries that signed the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), as well as politicians, climate activists and journalists.
UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, US President Joe Biden and Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon will attend, while The Queen is also set to make an appearance.
Sir David Attenborough and Greta Thunberg will also attend.
She went on: ‘All of these people have been talking about it in secret for months and months to make this work and what they’re each going to do is film a scene, have a reference that is going to cover a different aspect of climate change and – this is the fun bit – a soap first.
‘You’re going to see all the programmes do a nod to the other and characters will start popping up from one soap in another soap on screen. That has never been done before.’
Amid the scenes, a social media video featuring two residents from Emmerdale will be shown to Coronation Street characters, while one of the stars from Doctors will make an appearance in Weatherfield in a video shown during a Corrie episode.
Elsewhere, Casualty will be talked about in The Woolpack and a social media video from the cobbles will be discussed in The Queen Vic.
The soap crossover was the brainchild of Emmerdale’s Executive Producer Jane Hudson, who had got in touch with other soap producers about the idea.
She said of the episode: ‘Never before have all five soaps and both continuing dramas come together and united in telling one story. And we certainly haven’t seen characters pop up in other shows before.
‘This is a real treat for our audience, whilst also allowing us to get across a very important message.’
Kate Oates, Head of Continuing Drama at BBC Studios added: ‘I’m thrilled that our soaps and serial dramas have all come together to help highlight the issue of climate change amongst our millions of viewers.

‘We’re grateful to the teams that made this happen, and hugely look forward to seeing the talent from our own shows popping up in other iconic programmes.’
While Lucy Allan, Executive Producer of Hollyoaks, added: ‘We know how important climate change and environmental issues are to our youthful audience, and to all soap viewers.
It has been great to work together on an engaging way to, hopefully, inspire conversations about issues that are so important.’
