Gemma Atkinson hits back at mum-shamers who troll her for ‘spreading misinformation’ after revealing to fans she’s weaning four-month-old son
Gemma Atkinson has hits back at mum-shamers who trolled her for ‘spreading misinformation’ on Friday.
The actress, 39, announced she had begun weaning her four-month old son Thiago after ‘introducing some baby porridge’ but was met by cruel comments.
The NHS recommends parents introduce solids from six months onwards alongside breast milk or formula.
Sharing an update to her Instagram Story on Friday, Gemma wrote: ‘A few of you have asked if we introduced the porridge.
‘I mentioned a few weeks ago that I knew he was ready so we started a few weeks back. He has 2 bowls a day for now and he absolutely loves it. He gets excited when he sees the bowl.’

She continued: ‘Obviously everyone parents different and no one knows your baby better than you so always do what you think is best.’
One fan asked: ‘Hi! How did you know he was ready for the porridge? He’s adorable and only a few weeks younger than my little lady.’
Gemma replied: “Hey! I knew as it was the same things Mia did. Draining his bottles and still rooting for more (even with a 6 ounce) taking an interest in watching us eat, picking his lips when I was eating and reaching for my food if I was eating with him on my knee. He’s a lot bigger than Mia was as well so u knew he was defo ready.’
Her comment was met by backlash, as someone responded: ‘None of them are signs of readiness lovely. Signs of readiness are sitting up with no or little support, no tongue thrust and being able to put food up to their mouth themselves.
‘Look on the NHS website, draining bottles and watching you eat are not signs of readiness. Just really don’t want you spreading misinformation to new mams.’
Gemma hit back adding: ‘That’s why I always say ppl should do their own research. I spoke with a private baby physio who told me that the sitting up with no support is down to a babies weight and size not food related at all hence why they all do it at different stages.
‘The sitting up for food is to reduce choking hazards. Weaning with different foods of course you wait for the 6 month mark.
‘I won’t be giving him breadsticks or anything just yet. But smooth baby porridge from his same brand of milk recommended from 4 months is working for us, just as it did for Mia.’

She added: ‘Also, I LOVE our NHS but the guidelines change on the site a lot as well. When I’ve asked why something is recommended it’s always because “those are the guidelines now”.
‘There never seems to be any actual evidence or reason why which is a shame as it’d help us mums a lot more. I understand hospitals have policies they stick to but for me as a 2nd time mum I’m a lot more confident in my decisions for them. 100% each to their own though for sure.’
The update comes after Gemma revealed that she waited for the tennis result before giving birth when her waters broke during the Wimbledon final day.
In the shock confession, the actress said her partner Gorka Márquez, 33, begged her not to to go into labour until the game had finished.
The couple, who share two children, four-year-old Mia and baby Thiago, three months, made the admission on Gemma’s podcast The Overshare.
Discussing ‘terrible partners in labour’ with guest contributors, the couple spoke about Thiago’s birth.
Gemma began: ‘This is a thing with Thiago. My waters broke again on the Wimbledon final day. And it was Alcaraz and Djokovic.’
Gorka added: ‘I said please don’t go into labour now let me at least watch the final.’
He genuinely did say that…But yeah my waters broke early in the morning,’ Gemma continued.
‘I was upstairs on my own on the bed on all fours just breathing through my contractions because I wanted to try and stay at home for as long as possible this time.
‘I don’t know if it was a fear of the hospital or what, but I just thought until I can no longer tolerate the contractions I will be at home. And so yeah, I was upstairs just trying to deal with it. And every now and again I’d hear “vamos vamos” from downstairs.’

Gorka laughed: ‘I was downstairs having the tortilla chips watching the tennis… The game finishes…I went upstairs and I went “okay, now you can have the baby.’
The actress agreed: ‘Yeah he said “Alcaraz has won. You can get him out now if you want”… it got to the stage where I couldn’t hold a conversation.
‘So we was like, we need to go into the hospital. And this time you were much more relaxed I think because you knew what was happening.
Gorka added: ‘I knew what was going on…we were like, okay, we know how to react…we were more like organised…We knew everything. This time around. I actually enjoyed it.’
