Glenn Close’s iconic Oscars moment on Sunday wasn’t quite as spontaneous as it seemed.
The actress, 74, was nominated for best supporting actress for “Hillbilly Elegy,” which went to Yuh-jung Youn of “Minari.” But Close’s most memorable appearance of the night was late in the show during a game segment called “Questlove’s Oscars Trivia,” in which Lil Rel Howery went around the room to ask audience members about certain songs that Questlove played from the stage.
After putting Andra Day and Daniel Kaluuya to the test, all eyes were on Close as she was asked a question about the 1988 song “Da Butt.”
Close ended up schooling the crowd on the song before proceeding to actually do “Da Butt” dance, shaking her booty before letting out a big laugh and returning to her seat.
Reflecting on the now-viral moment late Monday, Close revealed in an Instagram post that she knew in advance what song she would be grilled on, but that the dancing portion was “completely spontaneous.”

“I knew that Lil Rel was going to quiz me about ‘Da Butt’ and all three guys helped me run through what I was to say,” Close said of her three tablemates – her friend, screenwriter Chris Terrio, best actor winner Daniel Kaluuya, and his “Judas and the Black Messiah” co-star Darrell Britt-Gibson.
“Darrell insisted that I mention the Backyard Band, on top of E.U., Suga Bear and the whole DMV,” Close explained. “I had googled ‘Da Butt’ and watched Spike’s music video so when Lil Rel asked if I could do the dance…you can actually see me think of the video. That part was completely spontaneous. Daniel, Darrell and Chris egged me on!!! It was ALL their fault.”
Close said she had the “MOST FUN” with her tablemates and now considers Kaluuya and Britt-Gibson her “friends for life.”

The actress sure made the moment look authentic when Howery asked her about the song Sunday night.
“Wait a second, I know – that’s ‘Da Butt,'” she said. “It was a classic song by the great Washington, D.C. go-go band E.U. (Experience Unlimited)…Spike Lee had it written for his brilliant movie ‘School Daze,’ and my friends at the Oscars missed it and it wasn’t nominated so it couldn’t have won, which I think is —” she said, before audio cut out for cursing.
