Jaden Smith Launched His Fashion Line MSFTSrep Just to Make 1 Item For Himself

Jaden Smith went into the family business, acting and singing like his father, Will Smith. He’s branched out in his own ventures, too, like his clothing line MSFTSrep. Smith once revealed that he launched the brand simply to make clothes for himself.

Smith appeared on the March 10, 2019 episode of the Business of HYPE podcast. Speaking about MSFTSrep, Smith revealed the origins of his clothes and how it grew from there.

Jaden Smith started by making clothes for himself

If they sold the clothes Smith was looking for, he might never have created his own. But, he couldn’t find his exact style in stores, so he made it himself.

“When I was young, I really wanted to have clothes that no one else had,” Smith said. “It all started with the discovery of drop crotch pants and realizing oh, they don’t make them in black. That’s when I was like wow, they don’t make black drop crotch pants? That makes no sense. So then I was like all right, let’s just make drop crotch pants for ourselves. Let’s be the cool kids crew and let’s just have clothes that no one else has.”

Jaden Smith decided to share his pants

Smith realized there could be other fashionistas like him who wanted black drop crotch pants. So he made them available to others, just in case.

“Then we were like, ‘Well, that’s kind of sus. We should give those clothes to other people. If they really want to buy it, if they want it, you should make it for other people. Okay, cool, we’ll just make the clothes for other people. We made it for ourselves but we’ll just make it for other people if they really want to buy it,’ and they did.”

MSFTSrep grew with the fans

Once Smith had a line of drop crotch pants, fans wanted more. Now you can get a Jaden Smith hoodie and many other items from MSFTSrep.

“So it kind of just began to evolve,” Smith said. “They were like, ‘These pants are dope but you should have a logo, you should make shirts and hoodies.’ The fans kind of told us what we needed to do. They started making hoodies on their own being like, ‘Yo, you should make hoodies like this.’”

One of those fans got a job with MSFTSrep.

“Then we started to find our first designers,” Smith continued. “We’re going to start hiring our fans to come work for us. That’s how we found our main designer, Momo right now, he’s back in L.A. He was in Sweden throwing MSFTS events on behalf of our brand. This is the person we want to be involved in our brand. They really care and they’re doing more than we are so we might as well give this 15-year-old a job and have them be a real deal designer at a young age.”
