James Cameron makes history as only director to have three films top $2 BILLION at worldwide box office… after Avatar: The Way Of Water becomes ‘sixth highest-grossing films of all time’
On the heels of the success of Avatar: The Way Of Water, James Cameron now has the distinction of being the only director to helm three films to top $2 billion at the worldwide box office, according to TMZ.
The long-awaited Avatar sequel topped the massive money milestone on Sunday, which comes just six weeks after its release, earning $2.024B at last check against a budget of between $350-460 million.
Cameron’s other two films in the illustrious list include the original Avatar (2009), which is number one of all-time, with $2.923B on a $237 million budget and Titanic (1997), after it raked in 2.195B against a budget of $200 million.

Along with Cameron’s three epic films, only three others have passed the $2 billion benchmark, and all of them are from Disney.
Coming in second on the all-time moneymaking list is Avengers: Endgame (2019), with $2.798B on a budget of $356-400 million.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) now sits at number four by earning $2.071B against a budget of $306 million.
And then there’s Avengers: Infinity War (2018), which has the fifth spot, by grossing $2.052B with a budget of $325-400 million.
By crossing $2 billion last weekend Avatar 2 is now the sixth highest grossing movie ever.

While the original Avatar is tops on the all-time moneymaking list, the film took 47 days after its release to cross the $2B milestone, according to a tweet from television personality Jon Erlichman.
In comparison, the Avatar sequel only needed 37 days to surpass that mark.
Showing its superhero might, Avengers: Endgame was the fastest to reach the exclusive list, doing it in just 11 days.
Cameron’s Titanic took the longest by taking 5,233 days after it hit theaters to reach $2 billion at the box office.
The success of Avatar: The Way Of Water ensures fans that there will be more sequels to follow.
Cameron had previously announced plans for three more installments in 2024, 2026 and 2028, but stipulated that the latter two would depend on the commercial reception of The Way Of Water.

‘It looks like with the momentum that the film has now that we’ll easily pass our break even in the next few days, so it looks like I can’t wiggle out of this and I’m gonna have to do these other sequels,’ he said, adding, ‘I know what I’m going to be doing the next six or seven years.’
Previously, the filmmaker has made no secret of the astronomical costs of making the movie, describing it as ‘very f***** expensive.’
Cameron even said before the release of the third installment that he would end the whole franchise early if audiences do not seem to ‘give a s***’.
He also addressed the misunderstanding about his comments related to the profits needed from The Way Of Water.

Metro reported that the famed director had said the film needed to be among the highest-grossing films in history to break even.
In response, the Kapuskasing, Ontario, Canada native shared how he thought many had taken his comments differently, thinking that The Way Of Water needed to reach $2 billion (£1.65bn) and be in the top 10 to break even.
‘[I] never actually gave it a number. I said it would have to be among the highest-grossing films in history and somebody else applied that number and it got picked up. The number is actually less,’ he said.
Cameron proceeded to add that he expects to have a discussion with Disney soon about what is going to happen with Avatar 3.
‘We’ve already captured and photographed the whole film, so we’re in extended post-production to do all that CG magic,’ he announced, adding, ‘And then Avatar 4 and 5 are both written. We even have some of 4 in the can.’
