Woman mortified after Botox ‘fail’ makes throbbing cheek ‘look like fish gill’

A woman turned to TikTok for help after her Botox went drastically wrong, leaving her cheek muscles throbbing like a fish gill.

Shelby Hooks, from the US, said she "freaked out" when she realised the strange movement in her right cheek.

She posted a video on TikTok and said: "Attention to anyone who has done masseter Botox before or does Botox for a living? I need help.

"What the hell is my masseter muscle doing?

"It's popping out, it doesn't happen on the other side, only here when I clench my jaw.

"First time doing masseter Botox and this doesn't seem normal. I'm kind of freaked out."

Shelby told viewers that the video was taken two days after getting the injection.

"I got masseter Botox for teeth grinding and jaw clenching because I have severe temporomandibular joint dysfunction and get jaw pain and migraines from it, not for cosmetic purposes," she clarified.

One viewer said: "Sometimes one side of the muscle kicks in before the other, causing the 'gill' like effect."

Another shared: "This happened to me a few weeks ago, I freaked out, but I gave it about a week to settle in, and it got better.

"But ultimately I needed a bit more."

Someone who claimed to be working as an anaesthetist suggested for Shelby to go back to the clinic for more injections in order to "relax" the muscles.

"2 x 30 units is not enough if your muscle was strong to begin with," one added.

Shelby has since noticed the swelling around the cheek go down, but said: "The practitioner did say I had crazy strong masseters.

"I went back to the clinic and had the doctor injected the last stubborn part and it went away completely after that."
