‘It’s something that needs to be done’: Janet Jackson breaks years of privacy to reveal all on the loss of Michael, motherhood and ‘Nipplegate’ in explosive new trailer for documentary
A new trailer for Sky’s anticipated Janet Jackson documentary has been released.
Ahead of the January 31 air date, the new teaser sees the music superstar, 55, joined by her family and celebrity friends including Mariah Carey and Samuel L Jackson to speak out on her incredible career and life.
As her loved ones admit they were shocked she had agreed to the documentary, Janet declares: ‘it’s just something that needs to be done’.

The four-part documentary coincides with the 40th anniversary of Janet’s first album and features never-before-seen archive footage from her childhood as well as home videos of her recent years as a mother to son, Eissa Al Mana, five.
The two-night, four-hour documentary joins Janet as she travels back to her hometown of Gary, Indiana to see where her journey began.
She starts to look back at her own life and reflect on her fight to the top and is seen discussing her major life events, including her Superbowl appearance with Justin Timberlake in 2004, the controversy surrounding her brother Michael Jackson, and becoming a mother later in life.
Filmed over five years, the documentary also includes interviews with Randy Jackson, Tito Jackson, Rebbie Jackson, Rev. Al Sharpton, Paula Abdul, Missy Elliot, Mariah Carey, Regina King, Ciara and Whoopi Goldberg.

The new trailer sees Janet looking back at her childhood fame and her and her sibling’s troubled relationship with their father as she admits: ‘There were times I didn’t understand where I fit in… My father was very strict, he was in charge of my life.’
The trailer also features footage of Janet as a mother and her past romances, as she tells the camera: ‘I haven’t given up on love.’
There are emotional moments as Janet breaks down when talking about her late brother Michael and the child abuse allegations that surrounded him. When asked if the allegations affected her own career, Janet replies: ‘Guilty by association.’

Later, the trailer teases what happened after the infamous ‘Nipplegate’ controversy at the 2004 Super Bowl XXXVIII in Houston, Texas.
The incident which marked the decline of Janet’s career, saw Justin escape relatively unscathed as he pulled off a piece of her corset and exposed Janet on stage.
The new trailer shows Janet being told by her team that Justin Timberlake has been trying to reach out to her to discuss her joining him at his 20018 Super Bowl performance.

Speaking about the anticipated film, Rick Murray, Executive Producer said: ‘The project has taken five years to come to fruition, but it’s been worth the wait as we gained unprecedented access to a global icon.’

To get the opportunity to tell her story and delve through never-before-seen personal archives has been fascinating.’
Janet Jackson is coming to Sky Documentaries and streaming service NOW Monday 31 January.
