Jennifer Garner chats ‘heartbreak’ of teenage daughter Violet Affleck, 15, growing up… as she admits the kids call her the ‘fun killer’

Golden Globe winner Jennifer Garner revealed the most personal parallel of her new movie Yes Day involved her relationship with her 15-year-old daughter Violet Affleck.

‘I’ve never done a movie where I drew more from personal experience ever,’ the 48-year-old mother-of-three admitted on Monday’s episode of SiriusXM’s The Jess Cagle Show.

‘The first draft [of the script] really had the teenager [played by Jenna Ortega] being snarky and really kind of nasty and a troublemaker.

‘So there was this kind of external pressure and I kept saying, “No! The heartbreak is just that she’s growing up at all. That’s what’s heartbreaking!”‘

Jennifer continued: ‘It’s heartbreaking for the mom and for the teenager, and just needing to have that kind of severing of those babymama ties. That’s what’s so hard. You don’t have to have her be a jerk. It’s even harder that she’s lovely.’

Violet was only 6 when Garner started making the philosophy behind Amy Krouse Rosenthal’s 2009 book into a real-life family tradition.

‘My kids do call me the “fun killer” – that’s in the movie,’ the Texan-born, West Virginia-raised star noted.
