Gary Goldsmith, Kate Middleton’s uncle, has spoken of the time he first met Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge.

He revealed he first met William, who was urged to apologise to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle for being 'hypocritical', when the prince and Kate started seeing each other during their time at St Andrews university.

Gary admitted: “The first time I met William was at Carole and Mike’s house… Catherine was cooking and William was making cups of tea.”

Kate’s uncle spoke further of how his mum would have loved to see her granddaughter marry the future king back in 2011.

“My father was a painter and decorator, mum was an accounts clerk and their eldest granddaughter was at Westminster Abbey about to marry the future king of this country.”

Gary went on to recall the wedding day on April 29 in 2011 ahead of the documentary The Day Will and Kate Got Married, where viewers will hear about the special day the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge exchanged their vows in front of 1900 guests.

“I beamed with pride. That was our little Kate, with Mike, walking in front of all those people, walking with her father up to William,” he revealed.

Gary then spoke of the details about the family celebrations and speeches which took place behind closed doors and how he was worried about Kate marrying into the royal family.

“I was nervous… one doesn’t know if she would thrive or survive, but from the moment that Prince Charles spoke, it was obvious that she was being welcomed with open arms and with love,” he said.

“So I knew she’d be safe… I think Kate and William smash it. They’re right for the country and I think that’s why we love them.”

The Day Will and Kate Got Married celebrates the momentous day through the memories of family, friends and insiders who played a part in it 10 years ago.

Alongside including Kate’s uncle, Gary, former Metropolitan Police commander Bob Broadhurst who was in charge of security on the day will feature in the documentary as well as royal historian Robert Lacey.

The dress’s embroider, the cake-maker, choristers and Kate's family friends and neighbours will also make an appearance.
