Laura Adlington, 32, revealed she chose not to start a family with husband Matt after doctors told her she would need to lose weight before she could start the treatment. The Great British Bake Off star said having to decide against having children was “the hardest thing I’ve ever gone through”.

She said: “Unless you’ve gone through infertility and that heartache of really wanting it and it not happening… It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever gone through.”

Laura, who appeared on the 2020 series of the Channel 4 show, went on to explain how infertility affected her mental health.

She admitted she found herself thinking: “What’s the point?” If she could not start family.

Laura said: “I’ve never thought, ‘I want to take my own life’, but I definitely have had thoughts that I didn’t want to be here any more.

“And I have phoned Samaritans on a few occasions and really benefitted from it,” she added to Fabulous magazine.

Laura revealed she has had issues with her weight since she was eight and found it difficult to shed the weight for the IVF process.

She explained: “It was such a lot to lose — about 14st and I just struggled to do that.

“I wonder if that will always play on my mind, particularly as I get older.”

Laura has been outspoken about her thoughts on infertility and how it has affected her.

Earlier this year, she took to social media to express her feelings of sadness whenever she thinks about her struggle.

Sharing an insight into her life on her Instagram Story, Laura said she wondered what could have been when she picked up her niece from school and watched parents with their children.

She wrote: “I did feel a little bit sad today seeing people I went to school with picking up their kids from the same school as my niece, thinking that could have/should have been me. But I’m trying not to dwell on it.”

In a follow-up story, Laura went on to open up about her heartbreak upon finding a babygrow she and Matt had bought.

She said: “Sorry, wasn’t planning on sharing that. Guess it’s really on my mind.

“I don’t really think about it any more to be honest, but some days, out of nowhere it just comes and slaps you in the face.”

Laura continued: “Like the other day, I was clearing out under the bed and found a babygrow we bought about six years [ago] from Tesco when we first started trying.

“I held it to my chest and started sobbing uncontrollably.

“I have no idea what to do with it now.”

Laura concluded: “Anyway, no use dwelling on it.

“Like I said, I’m lucky in other ways and I’m grateful to have my Niece’s and Nephew’s.” (sic)
