Michael Douglas, 77, cuts a smart figure in a suit as he attends the 21st Monte Cristo Awards Gala in New York

Michael Douglas cut a smart figure in a suit and tie as he attended the 21st Monte Cristo Awards Gala in New York on Monday. 

The 77-year-old dressed up for the event at Gotham Hall in a navy suit, a white shirt and added a dark blue tie.  

The actor slicked his shoulder length locks back out of his face for the evening as he posed on the red carpet solo.

During the night, the star took to the stage speaking to the audience at the Eugene O’Neill Theater’s event. 

Michael presented founder George C. White with the 21st Monte Cristo Award as he is an alumni and former Monte Cristo Award recipient himself.  

The gala event supports the Center’s commitment to developing new work and new artists for the stage.

Michael’s wife, Catherine Zeta-Jones, 52, was not seen at his side in New York after he posed solo for several cameras. 

The pair, have been married for over 20 years and often share sweet family snaps on their Instagram accounts. 

Despite Catherine not being at her husband’s side, she showed her admiration for him earlier this year for his SAG Award nomination.

The star posted a picture to her Instagram Story of Michael asleep, with their dog lazing above him, she said: ‘Congrats to my hubby for his SAG Award nomination.’

Michael was hoping to bag an award for his performance in The Kominsky Method during February’s ceremony.

He was nominated for both Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series and Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series – however didn’t take home any awards.

Despite not winning, Michael did make his mark on the awards by sending a message of support to Ukraine amid Russia’s attack.

Posting an image of Michael at the awards to her four million followers, Catherine referenced the ongoing conflict.

‘So proud of my SAG nominated husband. Note the Ukrainian flag coloured pocket squares. Keep the people of Ukraine in our prayers. #westandwithukraine’, she captioned the photo.

Michael wore a blue-and-yellow knitted pocket square with his black suit.

While on the red carpet, he pointed to the square, saying: ‘This is not the LA Rams,’ referencing the Los Angeles football team that outfits in the same colours.

 ‘If ever there was a time for us to appreciate what true democracy is, I’m just so proud of what these people of this country have done.’

Making a statement: While on the red carpet at the SAG awards, he pointed to the blue-and-yellow knitted pocket square supporting the people of Ukraine
