Miley Cyrus reveals she has had therapy over the criticism she received as a child star
Miley Cyrus has revealed that she has had to have therapy over the criticism she received as a child star.
The singer, 30, shot to fame in 2006 when she landed the Disney Channel sitcom Hannah Montana, which followed the adventures of a schoolgirl living a double life as a famous pop star.
Miley, who was just 13-years-old when she achieved global fame, has only dealt with the ‘painful memories’ that early stardom left her with in recent years.
Speaking to The Sun on Sunday newspaper’s Bizarre column, the actress revealed she is now ‘in a good place’ after getting help.
She said: ‘When I look back at the criticism I received as a child, it has only been these last few years that I have understood just how wrong that was.

‘I am a great believer in therapy to help heal painful memories and I am in a good place – but the reality is, it should never have happened!’
The Party In The USA songstress – whose sitcom ran from 2006 until 2011 – infamously shed her child star image with a sexually-charged performance of Blurred Lines with Robin Thicke at the 2013 VMAs.
On the same day, she released her raunchy Wrecking Ball video but insisted that the career move was nothing to do with attention and more that she had to “prove” that she was her “own person” away from the character she had played.
She added: ‘I am not an attention-seeking person but I had a point to prove that I was my own person and not a character I had been playing. I wouldn’t erase any part of my story or my transition – I always think it an interesting life makes for interesting storytelling.
‘I was honest with my fans about struggling with depression, and I know that has encouraged some of them to get help with the issues that they may be facing. That gave me a real purpose, a reason to get up in the morning. When you are open and honest, that becomes a part of who you are – and organically that is going to be reflected in your songwriting.’
Asked to give advice to others in showbusiness, Miley insisted that it is never a good idea for stars to search themselves online as she likened the dangers of the internet to that of addictive substances.
She said: ‘Don’t Google yourself – I am being totally serious, don’t Google yourself! People are so ready to talk about the dangers of drink and drugs for your people in the industry – but there isn’t enough warning about the internet. It can be a truly toxic place!’
It comes after Miley was the maid of honor at her mom Tish Cyrus’ wedding to Dominic Purcell earlier this month.

In a new interview with Vogue, the music artist revealed that walking her mom, 56, down the aisle was sentimental.
‘To see my mom this happy and in love is very emotional for me,’ the Hannah Montana alum said.
‘Dom and my mom share the sweetest, most genuine love. It’s almost like it’s for the first time, which is so fitting for my mom who is such a young soul,’ the pop star said of her parent.
She gushed about her mother and new stepdad, 53, ‘Since they met, they both started aging in reverse. Somehow, my mom has gotten even more beautiful.’
Miley even provided the venue for the nuptials, hosting the ceremony at her home in Malibu, California.
‘The day was as special and magical as they are,’ the Wrecking Ball hitmaker described to the glossy.
‘To stand beside my mother and give her away to Dom is a moment I will cherish for the rest of my life,’ she shared.
Tish, who was married to Miley’s dad Billy Ray Cyrus from 1993-2021, called the event ‘the most romantic fairy tale.’
Miley’s 36-year-old sister Brandi was also part of the wedding, serving as a bridesmaid.
While speaking with Vogue, Miley said, ‘My whole life my mom has been behind the scenes.

‘She has never stopped celebrating me and has been so supportive of my decisions. I feel honored to be that person for her now that I’m older,’ the superstar opened up.
