Phillip Schofield joked about coming out at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic as he accepted an accolade at the TRIC Awards on Wednesday afternoon.

A month before the world went into lockdown in March 2020, the 59-year-old bravely announced he was gay in an emotional confession that had been "consuming him for years".

And taking to the stage at the TRIC Awards on Wednesday afternoon to collect the award for Best Daytime Show for This Morning, Phillip began by commending the behind-the-scenes team for getting him and colleague Holly Willoughby through "day after day".

"This is a big award for our show. Thank you, TRIC," he began. "We all worked through it [the pandemic]. Our team is amazing and saw us through the whole thing.

"It's like nothing we ever experienced before, but we still managed to get the show out day after day after day."

Phil continued: "On a personal note, at the beginning of it all, I came out, the world went in.

"When you make a choice like that, and suddenly the streets are empty, and there's no one around, and you're thinking, 'What the f*** did I just do!'"

He was met with a wave of laughter from the audience before he proceeded to dedicate his award to his "best mate", Holly Willoughby, who was not in attendance.

Phil kept the laughs coming as he joked: "We're all in a very big hot room… it's now rancid with Covid. Enjoy your afternoon, because tomorrow we're all f***** and in isolation."

The TV star came out as gay in an Instagram post, moments before discussing it on This Morning.

He wrote: "With the strength and support of my wife and my daughters, I have been have been coming to terms with the fact that I am gay.

"This is something that has caused many heart-breaking conversations at home. I have been married to Steph for nearly 27 years, and we have two beautiful grown-up daughters, Molly and Ruby.

Phil added that his family had "smothered him with kindness and love, despite their own confusion."
