Ryan Reynolds Once Failed a High School Drama Class, Flunked Math, and Was Kicked out of School for Stealing a Car

Ryan Reynolds is one of Hollywood’s hottest hunks these days. However, life hasn’t always been easy for the Deadpool actor. Despite the fantastic success he enjoys these days, Reynolds might have been voted least likely to succeed in high school. Let’s take a look at the actor’s history compared to where he is today.

Ryan Reynolds the Hollywood star

Ryan Reynolds has enjoyed a lot of success in Hollywood. After an early television career, appearing on shows such as Two Guys, A Girl and a Pizza Place in 1998  and the Canadian-produced teen soap opera Hillside in 1991. Reynolds made his breakout film debut in the 2002 National Lampoon movie Van Wilder, solidifying his reputation as a comedic actor.

In 2016, Reynolds found critical and commercial success with Deadpool, a film that had been in development as early as 2000. Though the character of Deadpool was initially introduced in the X-Men franchise, none of the major characters were in the film. However, there are some jokes that poke fun of that fact peppered throughout the movie.

Reynolds has also become a sex symbol. People named him the Sexiest Man Alive in 2010. Interestingly, he was also the first Canadian to win this distinguished honor.

Reynolds as a teenager

Despite his charming good looks and successful Hollywood career, Reynolds was a bit of a loser in high school. According to The Things website, Reynolds has admitted that he flunked math, which was a bonding moment between himself and Hugh Jackman, who plays Wolverine. Jackman failed math as well.

He also flunked his high school drama class. Reynolds jokingly revealed this fact after winning an award for acting. Quoting Hugh Jackman’s words, he said,  “how could a guy who failed in drama class be this talented?”

Reynolds and Jackman both are living proof that you don’t need to have always been good at something to be successful with it. Perseverance has undoubtedly paid off for the pair.

Reynolds was also thrown out of school for stealing a teacher’s car. Although it sounds terrible, it was just a prank gone wrong. He and a few of his friends thought it would be funny to steal the teacher’s car and drive it around the block. Unfortunately, in Canada, even driving a car a few feet without the owner’s permission is considered stealing.

Ryan Reynolds finds success despite his rebellious youth

Reynolds got his start in acting at age 13. He attended an open casting call and landed a lead role in Nickelodeon’s Florida-shot teen soap opera Hillside. However, he didn’t tell his family he was auditioning for the position. It was after he had gotten the part that he told them. After all, he had to have their permission because he was underage.

This would prove to be a wise decision on Reynold’s part. He has since had major starring roles in a variety of films. Thanks to his rebellious nature, Reynolds focused his stubborn tenacity on his acting career, and it paid off handsomely.

Whether he is playing a comedy and action hero like Deadpool or a more dramatic role like Buried, Reynolds has proven that he has what it takes to make it, although he wasn’t showing much potential early on. Sometimes, it’s the trials and tribulations in life that mold people into who they ultimately become. For Reynolds, the troubles he experienced in his early years have certainly paid off as an adult. He hasn’t done too bad for a kid who stole a car and flunked math class.
