Sister Wives' Janelle Brown says relationship with Kody is 'strained'

Sister Wives’ Janelle Brown says her relationship with Kody ‘is pretty strained’ and that she doesn’t feel a ‘huge necessity anymore to stay’

Sister Wives star Janelle Brown opened up about her relationship issues with Kody Brown on Sunday’s episode of the TLC show, as the couple’s problems have been amplified amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Janelle, 52, explained her position in a discussion with Robyn Brown, 43, after husband Kody Brown, 53, had implemented rigid COVID-19 protocols in place for the family.

Janelle’s mother had died, and Kody told Robyn and Meri Brown, 50, to stay away from the funeral service to avoid potential exposure to the virus.

Robyn told Janelle she was sorry for not going to the funeral, and that ‘COVID has sort of pulled this blanket off of some of [their] issues.’

Janelle empathized with Robyn, admitting that the changing times had led her to question her marriage, and the lifestyle of plural marriage.

‘I’ve caught myself in the last few weeks really reflecting and being like, “Okay, look: Do I still choose plural marriage?”‘ Janelle said. ‘Yeah, I still choose it, but I’ve had to have that conscious decision with myself.’

Robyn said that she had ‘a lot to think about,’ and that she hoped the family could band together and ‘work this crap out.’

Janelle said, ‘With Kody and I right now, our relationship is pretty strained’

Janelle said the Brown family had ‘lost sight that we’re all in this together’ amid the changing times, and that she wasn’t sure the plural marriage was the best option for her with her children getting older.

‘I’ve had to really think,’ Janelle told Robyn. ‘My children are almost grown and there’s not a huge necessity anymore to stay. It was a wonderful way to raise children.

‘With Kody and I right now, our relationship is pretty strained. And you know, it’s easy to walk away.’

In confessional segments, Kody’s two other wives gave their thoughts on the issue.

Meri, noting that her daughter Mariah is out of the house, said she hadn’t ‘thought about’ abandoning the plural marriage lifestyle and leaving the Brown family.

Christine, 49, split from Kody this past November. In the episode, which was filmed before they parted ways, she said that she was evaluating her life decisions with balance amid the turbulent times.

‘We’re heading into Christmas, and I need to be present and be grateful for the family I have,’ Christine said. ‘I am who I am today because of polygamy, because I lived it.’

Following their split last fall, Christine said in an Instagram post that she ‘made the difficult decision to leave’ the relationship with Kody ‘after more than 25 years together’

Christine, who shares six children with Kody, said they would ‘continue to be a strong presence in each other’s lives as we parent our beautiful children and support our wonderful family.

‘At this time, we ask for your grace and kindness as we navigate through this stage within our family.’

Kody said in a statement that her ‘decision to leave comes with a great deal of sadness,’ after they ‘enjoyed many years together.’

He added: ‘I have a large amount of respect and admiration for her. Although we are moving forward on different paths, we will always remain committed parents.’

The current season of the TLC staple has seen Kody Brown deal with unprecedented family challenges in trying to lead the clan through the trying times of the pandemic with utmost caution, which has sparked a number of issues as a result.
