Manchester City vs Newcastle betting preview
With this game coming just three days after their UEFA Super Cup win in Greece, it’s fair to say Manchester City could be vulnerable this weekend.
Pep Guardiola has been vocal about this contest taking place on Saturday evening (as opposed to Sunday or Monday) and it’s obviously not an ideal situation for the hosts.
Underpinning that concern will be the quality of the opposition. With all due respect, if Sheffield United had been City’s opponents this weekend rather than next, then it probably wouldn’t be much of an issue.
As it is, Newcastle arrive at the Etihad fresh from a 5-1 demolition of Aston Villa on the opening day when they looked like they could be a real handful for any team – including the champions – this season.
Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon and debutant Sandro Tonali all shone brightly and the visitors look capable of troubling a City backline which has been far from watertight in games against Burnley and Sevilla in the past week.
With that in mind, both teams to score looks a good bet.
Newcastle to spring the upset will tempt some, although their 4/1 price looks less appealing once their record here is considered – they have never won at the Etihad, losing on 16 of their previous 18 Premier League visits.
In addition, City have won 21 of their last 23 home league games on their own turf so it’s not hard to get the feeling that you should be getting more than 4s here.
A punt in the goalscorer market at a considerably bigger price holds greater appeal – read on to check out our best bets on Saturday night’s showdown.
📝 Manchester City vs Newcastle key stats
- Newcastle conceded only 33 goals in 38 Premier League games in 2022/23 – exactly the same number as champions City.
- Newcastle have won only one of their last 31 Premier League games against Man City and have lost 14 in a row away. They have never won at the Etihad Stadium.
- Only Fulham’s Joao Palhinha received more cards than Joelinton’s 12 last season.
- City have lost two-time PFA player of the year winner Kevin de Bruyne to injury for several months. Ruben Dias and John Stones were on the bench in midweek so could return here.
- Newcastle report no new injuries. Swedish international Alexander Isak is set to keep his starting place ahead of Callum Wilson; both scored against Villa last week.
Manchester City vs Newcastle best bets
Both teams to score
Newcastle looked slick in attack on the opening day when scoring five past Aston Villa.
While City have delivered two decent wins so far, they’ve also conceded good chances against both Burnley and Sevilla.
Expect both teams to find the net in this one.
⚽ Back both teams to score at 8/11 at Spreadex ⚽
Sandro Tonali first goalscorer
Tonali was an eyecatcher on the opening weekend as Newcastle brushed Villa aside.
Notably he was often found inside the penalty area, scoring after six minutes and having another shot on target after eight.
OK, the Italian may well have to play more defensively away to the champions but given what we saw last week, 25/1 about him repeating last week’s feat by scoring first looks worth a punt.
🥅 Back Tonali to score first at 25/1 at bet365 🥅
Fabian Schar at least 1 shot
No Premier League defender had more shots than Schar in the 2022/23 campaign and offering odds-against about him having one of any sort in this match looks risky from a bookie perspective.
Schar is an aerial threat from set pieces, while he’s also happy to try his luck from distance. He even takes the odd free-kick around the box.
The Swiss international managed a shot in 22 of his 27 post-World Cup games last season and can land this bet again in this match.
💥 Back Schar 1+ shot at 11/10 at William Hill 💥
