Man’s joke proposal branded ‘mean’ as he makes girlfriend of 6 years cry

A man sparked outrage after going down on one knee and proposing to his girlfriend as a Christmas joke – with a pair of earrings instead of an engagement ring in the velvet box.

In the clip, uploaded on TikTok by his girlfriend @hannnluck on December 23, the lad pulls out a little jewelry box that looks suspiciously similar to one you would use for a ring.

His girlfriend Hannah immediately looks like she will cry, holding her face in her hands as he gives a loving announcement.

Kneeling down, he says: "I love you so much, it's been six years, will you please… take these earrings?"

He then pops open the lid to reveal a pair of glittery studs – not what his girlfriend was expecting.

"I knew it," someone says, while he bursts out laughing.

The video was watched more than 1.3 million times on the video-sharing app and many women were shocked by the joke and said they didn't find it very funny.

"I would simply break up with him," commented one.

A second added: "It would be funny if it were six months but she was probably expecting it at six years bro this is heartbreaking."

"This is actually really mean," said a third.

One lass wrote: "I'll take the earrings and wear them on a date with my new future because no."

A bloke even commented: "Six years? Bro cut line or reel it in, pick one the fish is dying."

Hannah defended her boyfriend in a second video, saying their relationship was full of pranks and they were now properly engaged after going on holiday together.
