Mansion of man who designed red phone box for sale for £1.75m

Country mansion of Sir Giles Scott who designed the red phone box goes up for sale for £1.75m – complete with kiosk in the garden

A country mansion that belonged to the architect who designed the iconic red telephone box is up for sale for £1.75m – and it comes with a kiosk in the garden.

Sir Giles Scott designed many of the UK’s most important 20th century buildings and structures, including the iconic K2 telephone boxes.

The Grade II* listed six-bedroom property includes one of Scott’s K2 red phone boxes on the grounds. It is one of only 100 original boxes left in existence.

Scott actually inherited Hollis Street Farm in Bexhill, East Sussex, in 1889 when he was nine years old.

His father George, also an architect, was declared to be of unsound mind so it went to his son through a bequest with a life tenancy to his mother Ellen.

The mansion even comes with one of less than 100 original red telephone boxes which were designed by Sir Giles Scott

Whilst living at Hollis Street Farm he would cycle the area, sketching buildings, which later inspired his ideas.

Scott went on to design Liverpool Cathedral, as well as the library at the University of Cambridge, the Bodleian Library and Waterloo Bridge.

He also designed Battersea Power Station, the Forth Road Bridge and Bankside, now the Tate Modern gallery.

But he is most famous for the K2 red telephone box, a number of which have become listed structures in their own right.

The property remained in the family for more than a century. Scott’s mother died there in 1953 and his son Richard lived at the house until 2017.

The six-bedroom property, which has an outdoor swimming pool, historic listed barn and seven acres of land, is now on the market.

The house has a cinema room, large reception room, study, library, open plan kitchen and dining room on the ground floor, as well as cellars below.

Upstairs over two floors, there is a family bathroom and six double bedrooms, four of which have en suite bathrooms.

The phone box was installed by the current owners and can be purchased by separate negotiation.

There is also a triple car port and stunning views across the surrounding countryside to Beachy Head.

The gardens are designed as a series of distinct areas framed by stone walls and hedging, with a vegetable garden, greenhouse, lodge and two kitchen gardens.

The remaining grounds are kept as parkland and include mature horse chestnut, beech, oak, and copper beech trees, with views all the way to the Beachy Head.

Amanda Hutton, of estate agents Fine & Country Uckfield, said: ‘The house belongs to a family who have loved living there but decided that now is the right time to downsize.

‘It’s an absolutely beautiful house and would be perfect for a family, perhaps one that has horses as there is plenty of space to keep them.

‘It would also appeal to anyone who appreciates the illustrious history of Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, as his family had a long and happy association with the house. His mother died there in 1953 and Scott’s son, Richard, lived in the house until 2017.’
