‘My abortion saved my life’: Jameela Jamil vents ‘disgust’ at strict new Texas abortion laws, saying terminating her own pregnancy when she was younger left her feeling ‘only deep relief and gratitude’

London-born actor Jameela Jamil has slammed recent controversial changes to abortion laws in Texas, saying that her own pregnancy termination ‘saved my life’.
The LA-based TV star and activist, 35, took to her Instagram page on Sunday to share her ‘disgust’ at the recently-passed ruling in the right-wing US state which states pregnancies cannot be legally terminated after six weeks.
Jamil, 35, said that her own abortion when she was younger – at eight weeks’ pregnant – had left her with ‘not a minute of regret’ only ‘deep relief and gratitude that I lived in a country that made abortion accessible and safe.’

Jamil, 35, posted a single line image to her 3.5 million Instagram followers saying ‘I had an abortion’
She followed up with a detailed post about how her own termination – at eight weeks’ pregnant – had ‘saved my life’
After posting ‘I had an abortion’, The Good Place actor described how she’d fallen pregnant after two types of contraception failed and had a termination in the first trimester.
She told her 3.4million followers: ‘I was mentally/physically/emotionally and financially unstable and most importantly DID NOT WANT A CHILD. That should be enough. My life matters more than an unborn human.’
Jamil said the Texan laws would only contribute to unsafe abortions, ‘especially for the disadvantaged’.
The legislation prohibits abortions in Texas as early as six weeks — before some women know they are pregnant — while it opens the door for almost any private citizen to sue abortion providers and others.
The law also allows citizens to sue providers or anyone helping get an abortion.

On Saturday, people marched in towns and cities – including New York, LA and the capital – to protest the deeply conservative ruling and urge Washington to increase state restrictions on abortion and advocate for maintaining a constitutional right to the procedure.
In her detailed post, Jamil said: ‘Abortion is the freedom to decide on your own future’ before urging her followers to ‘act now’, writing: ‘I am disgusted by Texas. This is not about children. We can’t even feed the children who are here.
‘This is about control. This is about abuse. This is about a hatred of women’s freedom and progress. This is the beginning of all other progressive rights being rolled back.’
Billie Eilish also used her platform at the Austin City Limits Festival in Texas on Saturday night to make a political statement on the state’s abortion laws.

The singer, 19, used the big stage to lend her support to women’s right to choose by lashing out at the Texas abortion law – legislation that prohibits abortions in the state as early as six weeks, before some women know they are pregnant.
The words ‘Bans Off Our Bodies’ flashed on the screen behind her as the pop star, born Billie Eilish Pirate Baird O’Connell, took a moment to address the crowd, saying: ‘I’m sick and tired of old men. Shut the f*** up about our bodies.’
Last month, Texas Governor Greg Abbott said in a signing ceremony on the state’s new abortion legislation: ‘Our creator endowed us with the right to life and yet millions of children lose their right to life every year because of abortion’.
He added that the legislature ‘worked together on a bipartisan basis to pass a bill’… that ensures that the life of every unborn child who has a heartbeat will be saved from the ravages of abortion.’
