Andy Murray will begin his quest to win his third Wimbledon this afternoon when he faces fellow Brit Ryan Peniston.

The pair will go head-to-head on Centre Court, with Peniston looking to cause a major upset.

The winner of this afternoon’s clash will face a tough test in the world No 5 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas, should he get through 91-ranked Dominic Thiem.

Day One of this year’s Wimbledon saw Novak Djokovic ease into the second round. The four-time defending champion defeated Argentinian debutant Pedro Cachin 6-3 6-3 7-6 (4), but the clash was delayed for nearly an hour and a half after the first set because of a damp court despite the roof being deployed.

Ryan Pensiton was born in November 1995 in Essex. He has two older brothers named Sam and Harry.

When Ryan was a child, he survived rhabdomyosarcoma – which is a soft tissue cancer.

He was given the all-clear 18 months after his diagnosis, but the illness affected his growth and was always considerably smaller than his classmates.

Peniston turned professional in 2018 following his graduation from the University of Memphis.

Reports have claimed that Peniston is married to Haley Goodman. However, the Brit has publicly stated that he has a girlfriend.

Leading up to this year’s tournament, Peniston confirmed that he has a girlfriend.

Speaking on how he found out he will be playing Andy Murray, Peniston said: ‘I was driving from my girlfriend’s and I had a text from my coach which just said, “Andy, exclamation mark, exclamation mark”,’ said Peniston.

‘It’s pretty cool. I almost crashed.’

While reports have mentioned that Peniston has a wife, he revealed heading into Wimbledon that he has a girlfriend

History

Peniston first broke on the scene in 2020 after he competed in the ‘Battle of the Brits’ tournament.

He performed well and only lost on final set tie-breaks to Dan Evans and Cameron Norrie.

The Brit made his ATP main draw singles debut at the Queen’s Club Championships as a wildcard last year.

His first recorded win came against world No 5 Casper Ruud – a result which shocked many tennis fans.

He would go on to reach the quarter-final stage. Along the way, he defeated another top 50 player in Francisco Cerundolo.
