Boris Johnson 'will pay the bill' if he and Carrie marry at Chequers

Boris Johnson ‘will pay the bill’ if he marries Carrie Symonds at the Prime Minister’s Chequers country residence next year

  • Speculation is rife about the location for Mr Johnson’s third marriage next year
  • Chequers, near Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire, is among the favourites
  • The PM, 56, and Ms Symonds, 33, are due to tie the knot on July 30, 2022

Boris Johnson will foot the bill if he decided to use the prime minister’s official country residence for his wedding to Carrie Symonds next year.

Speculation is rife about the location for Mr Johnson’s third marriage and Chequers, the opulent grace-and-favour pad in Buckinghamshire is among the favourites.

The Prime Minister, 56, and Ms Symonds, 33, have sent out save-the-date cards to friends and family for the event on July 30, 2022.

The pair got engaged in 2019 but had to delay the wedding due to the coronavirus crisis.

A source told the Telegraph that it was ‘fair to assume’ that Mr Johnson would pick up the tab if Chequers is the location.

But it has emerged that Port Lympne Safari Park, where Ms Symonds works, could also be on the shortlist. The Kent estate contains a five-star lodge for paying guests to stay among the wild animals.

Mr Johnson is under pressure over allegations that he is short of cash and sought money from Tory donors to pay for the redecoration of the couple’s Downing Street and a nanny for their son Wilfred. He denies the claims.

Chequers was bequeathed to the nation in 1917 by Lord and Lady Lee of Fareham.

The couple wanted the 16th century, 1000-acre estate to be a ‘place of rest and recreation for Prime Ministers’ to help them cope with the pressures of government.

But while the upkeep of the estate and staffing is paid for by a trust, the prime minister of the day has to pay for food and drink and other bills while staying there.

If the wedding took place there it would not be the first big personal bash hosted by a PM there.

In 2014 David Cameron reportedly threw an ‘Ibiza-style’ rave at Chequers to mark his wife Samantha’s 40th birthday.

The 200 guests were said to have included former Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson, comedian Harry Enfield, and actress Helena Bonham Carter.

Mr Johnson and Ms Symonds are the first unmarried couple to live in Downing Street, having moved in during July 2019.

The PM proposed while on holiday in Mustique in the Caribbean, shortly his party won the December 2019 General Election.
