Eight silent sentries stand watch next to the Royal Albert Hall to launch next year’s D-Day anniversary concert
- Next year, 1,475 silhouettes will be in the fields of British Normandy memorial
- Pop-up art installation was created by volunteer-run Standing with Giants
Eight life-sized silhouettes of soldiers stood watch opposite the Royal Albert Hall yesterday – to launch next year’s concert for the 80th anniversary of D-Day.
Entitled For Your Tomorrow, the statues were displayed next to the Albert memorial in Hyde Park and represent each decade that has passed since the Normandy landings in 1944.
The pop-up art installation, created by volunteer-run art project Standing with Giants and made from recycled materials, was admired by Normandy veterans Mervyn Kersh and Ken Hay, both 98.
Next year, 1,475 of the silhouettes will grace the wild meadow fields of the British Normandy memorial in France, representing each of the men and women who died serving under British command on D-Day.

Yesterday’s display heralds next year’s Albert Hall concert – backed by the Mail and set to be a star-studded evening of music and pageantry to honour the servicemen and women who fought and died in the Normandy campaign.
It is among a raft of plans already in motion for the historic anniversary, which is likely to be the last milestone commemoration for many of the remaining D-Day veterans.
Dan Barton, who set up Standing with Giants in 2019, told the Mail: ‘There’s so many talented people in this country and the people who do this can say they’ve been part of the People’s Tribute.’
