Grieving parents who lost their baby girl during childbirth were reportedly given a dead rat instead of her body.

Jari Daniela Velez and Daniel Alejandro Jaramillo claim they were handed a huge rodent at the hospital in Tulua, Colombia.

They have now complained after the hospital’s epic blunder.

Jari Daniela Velez was 28 weeks pregnant when she was admitted to the Tomas Uribe Uribe Hospital to give birth on Saturday, May 15.

Sadly, her baby girl, who was called Emily Samara, died during childbirth.

Daniel says he went to the morgue to lay eyes on his deceased daughter before her funeral.

The morgue assistant opened the polystyrene box with the girl's details on.

Inside the box they found a red plastic bag in which her remains had supposedly been stored to hand over to the undertaker.

But when they opened the bag, Daniel said they saw it contained a pair of latex gloves and a dead rat instead.

According to Caracol Radio, he said that when “it was opened, what was found is the body of a rodent, it was a rat that looks like a possum”.

The family was left disgusted by the foul mix-up.

Jari’s cousin, Majo Velez, took to social media to demand the hospital hand over the baby's body.

She wrote: "At the hospital they gave us a dead rat; I demand they give us the girl."

The hospital issued a statement apologising to the family members and informing them that an internal investigation would take place on Monday, May 17.

But according to reports, staff working at the hospital had not yet been able to locate the baby girl's body.

Daniel told local news outlet Valle al Instante: "The only thing I ask for is justice and my baby so I can give her a Christian burial."

The family is said to have now reported the hospital to the authorities.

In its statement, the hospital said:” We want to inform you that for transparency purposes we have initiated an internal investigation and made the investigation of what happened in your care process available to the competent authorities, who will also be in charge of providing you with information about what happened.

“For what happened we apologise and make ourselves available for whatever you require as a family.”
