1% Club viewers baffled by winning question that nine final contestants couldn’t answer – can YOU get it right?

Viewers of Lee Mack’s quiz show The 1% Club have been left baffled by a question which stumped nearly all of the programme’s contestants, even after the answer was revealed.

Episode 4 of the show’s second series saw an impressive 11 contestants make it to the final round, but only two of them were able to land the correct answer to a last question which left viewers ‘confused’.

The 1% Club tests 100 members of the public’s intelligence, common sense and logic with questions that ascend in order of difficulty according to what proportion of the wider public can answer them – 90 per cent, 80 per cent, down to one per cent. 

This one per cent question was: ‘What letter replaces the question mark in this sequence?’

And the sequence was the following: ‘Y, Y, H, L, Y, ?, Y, T, R, R, R, R.’

How to play The 1% Club 

In The 1% Club, 100 contestants compete for a maximum of £100,000.

Each round consists of an increasingly difficult question, from one which 90 per cent of the general public got correct, to the final one per cent question.

Those who answer wrong after a 30 second timer are eliminated, while those remaining at the end share the prize money, and are inducted to ‘The 1% Club’. 

Players can also use one ‘pass’ on their way to the final, or choose to leave the game after the 30 per cent question with a £1,000 prize.

Answers given by those still on the ITV game show ranged from H, to T, R, N and L, but none of them were right.

It was Joe Clark and Liz Casey who each got the correct answer, and £47,500 in turn.

Even then, only Liz had got to that answer with the right method.

Joe admitted: ‘I guessed it. I know it’s the most commonly used letter.’

To which the show’s host remarked: ‘You lucky sod!’

In fact, the answer was E, but can you figure out how? 

The reason behind that was also lost on many viewers, who took to TikTok after the episode to comment on a reposted clip of the final exchange.

One asked: ‘Can someone explain why it’s E?’

Someone else commented that they only knew the answer because ‘I saw a very similar question on the Australian version about 10 TikToks ago’.

Another said: ‘It’s E, pretty easy (it took me like an hour to figure it out).’

But many were also on hand to explain that the key was that these was all the last letters of the months of the year – in order – excluding June, hence the final answer.
