Jada Pinkett has admitted she was shocked that Will Smith referred to her as his ‘wife’ during his explosive outburst at the Oscars in 2022 – which led to him slapping Chris Rock.
The 52-year-old Girls Trip actress revealed earlier this week that she and her husband had been separated for six years at the time of the 94th Academy Awards, when he infamously leapt onto the stage and assaulted Chris over a joke he made about Jada’s hair.
Unpacking the notorious moment in an interview with Hoda Kotb on the Today show, Jada confessed: ‘First of all, I’m really shocked because, mind you, I’m not there.
‘We haven’t called each other husband and wife in a long time. I’m like, what is going on right now?’

Jada (seen with Will in 2022 – six years after they separated) said she considered a legal divorce but could never go through with it
Jada had recently revealed that she suffers from alopecia at the time of the spectacle, and an outraged Will didn’t respond well to Chris’s gag.
He stormed the stage and slapped the comedian after fuming ‘keep my wife’s name out of your f*****g mouth’ – before going on to win Best Actor for his role in King Richard that night.
Jada claimed that after Chris had referred to her as ‘G.I Jane’ he leant over to her to apologize – which infuriated Will even further.
She continued: ‘Will’s still talking cause now he’s mad because Chris is talking to me, and I go “Chris, this is about some old sh*t.” That’s all I could think to say. It’s not him whatsoever.’
Jada’s admission comes after she claimed that stand-up comic Chris once asked her out on a date when divorce rumors about her and Will were swirling.
‘I think every summer all the reports would come out that me and Will were getting a divorce,’ she said. ‘And this particular summer, Chris, he thought that we were getting a divorce.
‘So he called me and basically he was like, ‘I’d love to take you out,” she recalled. ‘And I was like, ‘What do you mean?’ He was like, ‘Well, aren’t you and Will getting a divorce?’ I was like, ‘No, Chris, those are just rumors.’
‘He was appalled. And he profusely apologized and that was that.’

Earlier this week, Jada revealed that she and Will decided seven years ago to live ‘completely separate lives’ because they were ‘exhausted with trying’ to make their marriage work.
‘I think we were both kind of just still stuck in our fantasy of what we thought the other person should be,’ she told Hoda.
Explaining why they haven’t legally divorced, she added: ‘I made a promise that there will never be a reason for us to get a divorce. We will work through … whatever. I just haven’t been able to break that promise.’
Speaking to People, Jada noted that no permanent decisions have been made about the future of her marriage, explaining that she and Will are ‘still figuring it out’.
‘We’ve been doing some really heavy-duty work together,’ she said. ‘We just got deep love for each other and we are going to figure out what that looks like.’
She went on to praise her children – Jaden, 25, Willow, 22, and Trey, 30, who is Will’s son from a previous relationship – for standing by her during this rocky time in her relationship.
‘My children, they’re little gurus. They’ve taught me a deep sense of self-acceptance,’ she said. ‘They love every part of me. The level of love, unconditional love that they have for me and their dad.
‘And it’s one thing to want to be the person that gives that unconditional love. And then there’s, to be the recipient of that.’
